Water Damage: The Most Common Causes

6/9/2021 (Permalink)

Water damage has a wide range of effects on structures. Worst of all, water damage that isn't addressed right away, such as through water damage restoration, can eventually compromise a building's foundation. The worst thing about water damage is that it can happen at any time. No matter how great or small, SERVPRO of Westfield is waiting for your call!  Below is a list of common causes of water related loss:

Broken Pipe: Stoppages and damage are common in plumbing systems, especially in older homes. Look for cracks, bulges, stains, and other symptoms of moisture on your ceiling or flooring to prevent plumbing problems before they start. If you see a leak, it could indicate that there is also damage in other areas.

Increases in your water bill could also indicate that your landscaping, flooring, and foundation have been damaged. Look for pipes in places where water tends to collect, such as crawl spaces, cupboards, and attics. If you notice any evidence of water damage, contact someone as soon as possible to avoid further issues.

Washer Overflows: Leaky hoses are the most common cause of washing machine flooding. Over time, the leak may worsen, causing damage to your home.

Water Heater Overflow: If you have an old water heater, there is a good chance it will leak at some point. The same can be said for water heaters that have been neglected or improperly installed. An overabundance of tank pressure might also cause a leak. When a water heater leaks, the area will immediately get flooded. Water damage prevention is difficult, but not impossible. If you address the following potential reasons, you might be able to avoid or at least minimize water damage.

Broken appliance hoses: As appliances age, their pipes may corrode and their hoses may become brittle. Leaks from your dishwasher might create an unsightly puddle on your kitchen floor. Worn gaskets, broken doors, and clogged drains are all common sources. It has the potential to harm your tiling, electrical wiring, and paint.

Rising Water from Flooding: Hurricanes, thunderstorms, and floods can all bring a lot of water into your house, flooding it. Water that cannot be absorbed by the earth may overflow into your home. A flood alarm and warning system can help you prepare for a natural disaster and safeguard your home. If you live near a body of water, make sure you have flood insurance.

Air Conditioner Drip Pan Overflow: Condensation forms on the evaporator coil of your air conditioner, which drips into a drain pan and out the back of your house via a condensate drain line. Until the drain pan is destroyed or the condensate drain line is filled with dust or debris, this drainage system operates. Because the water can't get out, it will seep into your home through your air conditioner. All of the water spilling from your air conditioner may harm your floors and walls, as well as making your insulation wet.

Other causes:

  • Roof Leaks
  • Leaks from a Broken Window
  • Toilet or Bathtub Overflow
  • Fire Related Water Damage
