Keep Business Running Smoothly by Planning for Severe Weather | SERVPRO of Westfield

9/19/2023 (Permalink)

Business man holding an umbrella and briefcase with a dark thunderstorm behind him. If your home or business was damaged in a storm, call SERVPRO of Westfield to get you back in action.

Proper training is a key part of running a successful business. Not only does this training prepare your employees on their first day, but it also prepares them for the future.

When you think about all the essential kinds of training your team needs, you might overlook something like storm readiness. Since disasters are capable of shutting down the workplace, this is not a topic you and your team can afford to avoid.

To keep your business safe, you’ll need to prepare your Westfield team! Use our guide to help you get started as you introduce storm preparedness in the workplace.

Know Your Risk

Weather threats can come in all sorts of forms, which is why it’s so important to create a plan that prepares your team for every single one. Becoming familiar with Westfield’s most common weather conditions will be extremely helpful as you create your workplace plan.

Westfield is visited by a variety of weather hazards like thunderstorms, tornadoes and occasional flash floods. These conditions cause widespread devastation, damage property and, at times, shut down businesses for good. To keep your building safe from local weather threats, you’ll need to anticipate them.

Looking into your flood risk is never a bad idea when assessing your local weather threats. You can also benefit from tuning into a local network each day to check the forecast and having a reliable source of weather alerts.

Make a Plan to Communicate

Great communication can go a long way when running a business. Not only does this help you create an open and safe environment, but it can also be lifesaving in the event of an unexpected disaster.

Make sure your business has a digital way to communicate inside and outside of the workplace. This can allow you to quickly address concerns and implement necessary measures, even in the middle of a storm!

Plan Your Evacuation

It can be a frightening scenario to face, but you may need to evacuate your building when severe weather is at its worst. Make sure your team is well-informed about evacuation procedures by clearly marking exits and practicing an evacuation drill often.

You should also have a safe spot the whole team can go to if a shelter-in-place order is needed. Identify interior rooms or areas with no windows that can serve as safe spaces during storms or other weather emergencies.

Disaster can be a scary topic to approach in the workplace, but it’ll pay off in the long run! Ensure your Westfield team is prepared to take on weather threats of all kinds by having a stellar plan in place.

Don’t let extreme weather take control! If storms strike your business, SERVPRO® can help you restore your losses.

Your Storm Preparedness Guide | SERVPRO of Westfield

9/19/2023 (Permalink)

Empty parking lot with lots of greenery shown during a heavy downpour of rain. Have you been impacted by the unusual summer storm season? SERVPRO of Westfield has your back when you experience flood and water damage.

There’s no doubt about it: It’s hot out there! During the middle of summer, we are all too familiar with heat and humidity. And that heat and humidity is the perfect recipe for storms that pack a powerful punch.

That means it’s important to make sure your house and your property are protected against storm damage this time of year. Wondering where to begin your preparations? Keep reading!

Getting Prepped for the Season

When it comes to storm preparation, you may know more about the topic that you realize! Many steps for protecting your house can be easily incorporated into your daily routines—and they may actually already be a part of your regular to-do lists.

Consider your lawn routine. When you’re taking care of your yard and landscaping, you probably take a regular look at the trees. Make sure you’re trimming the trees regularly, cutting down branches that are dead or dying. When a storm pops through, it can turn those branches into projectiles quickly and easily.

You probably also inspect your house fairly often, too. When you’re performing home maintenance, say a seasonal check of the HVAC unit, make the time to check the outside of your home for places that water could leak indoors, like gaps around the windows or missing shingles on the roof.

And finally, give a close eye to the objects hanging around outside your house. You probably have a trash can out there and maybe some patio furniture. All objects that stay outside need to be strapped down or otherwise secured in some way.

Upgrading Your Home’s Defenses

While the storm prevention strategies listed above can be done without spending extra money, you can also make some home upgrades that may give you extra peace of mind during a storm.

For one, if you have a modular building on your property, like a shed or similar structure, invest in hefty tie-downs to keep it adhered to the ground even in strong winds.

If you have many trees on your property or some that are close to your roofline, consider adding gutter guards to your gutters. These guards can keep leaves, branches and other debris out of your gutters, so that water flows effectively through them and to the ground.

Consider fortifying your windows against the wind by adding storm shutters or by upgrading your windows altogether. Every little bit of added protection can make a difference.

SERVPRO of Westfield is available 247 to effectively restore your property in the event of storm damage. We’re here when you need us!

As summertime approaches in Houston, we eagerly anticipate the hot, sunny days and outdoor get-togethers with our family and friends.

To avoid dangerous circumstances and potential fires, it is essential to put grilling safety first. Are in the know about grilling safety basics? Our SERVPRO of Westfield team fills you in on the essentials below.

Optimal Grill Setup

When it comes to grilling safety, the first thing to do is find a safe location for your grill. Ensure it is placed outside, away from enclosed spaces like garages or roof overhangs. It’s important to have enough ventilation, and you should try to keep the grill away from anything that could catch fire.

Always keep the grill at least 10 feet away from your home or exposed deck. Additionally, find a space that is free of kids and animals to put everyone’s safety first.

Propane grill owners should know to always carefully check the gas lines for leaks and ensure secure connections. If you are using a charcoal grill, inspect it for any ash buildup, dents or cracks. Addressing any issues with leaking lines or cracked surfaces is crucial to prevent hazardous fire situations.

Stay Alert While Handling Flames

It’s important to pay attention while grilling and to have a water source, such as a spray bottle, near you in case you need to put out a small flame. Having a hose or fire extinguisher handy is crucial for bigger fire emergencies.

Remember to shut off the gas after cooking or seal the vents on a charcoal grill to prevent the supply of oxygen from continuing. After you’re done grilling, throw away ash and embers in a metal can to prevent potential fire threats. Make sure the grill has completely cooled down before you leave your grill unattended.

Have a Splendid, Safe Summer

We wish you summer filled with delightful moments and safety. However, if a fire does break out during your BBQ, SERVPRO of Westfield is here, ready to provide professional fire damage restoration services.

Texas weather brings plenty of severe threats, especially when the temperature begins to rise in the spring and the summer. Severe thunderstorms, flooding rain and even the remnants of coastal storms have affected Westfield and the surrounding neighborhoods.

Immediately After the Storm

You also need to be prepared for the potential of more severe weather. Keep a weather radio handy, and make sure you can safely get back to your shelter if another warning is issued.

As things continue to quiet down, spend some time reaching out to those you love to ensure their safety and let them know of your own. If cell service isn’t available, texting may still work. If you can safely leave your shelter, go and check on those around you.

Don’t go into buildings that have been damaged, but instead clear out any debris you can for people to safely exit damaged buildings. Clear debris out of the road as you are able as well in order to allow for emergency personnel to safely navigate their way in.

When Rain Invades Your Home | SERVPRO of Westfield

9/19/2023 (Permalink)

image of a large body of water during a rain storm with ripples caused by the heavy downpour Water damage in your home? Not for long with SERVPRO of Westfield on the case!

Oh, the sweet sound of rain pitter pattering on the roof. Rain can be a refreshing gift that leaves the world feeling calm and new. It brings new life to the green world outside and creates a kind of peace on a hot day.

When rain is needed, it is certainly great, but rain can also come in fast and furious, creating widespread issues. Heavy rain can quickly leave roads covered with water and yards full of mud, all while challenging gutter systems. When rain gets heavy, it often comes with other threats, too, like high winds that can serve to drive flooding.

SERVPRO of Westfield wants to help you keep your home safe and ensure you are always prepared for whatever Mother Nature brings. We are also always right around the corner, ready to dry your home out when things do get intense.

Hazards of Intense Rain

Flooding has always been an issue in Harris County. A major flooding event happens at least every two years. There has been a lot of investments in protecting our towns from floods, but we know we still can’t control what Mother Nature is going to do.

While flooding is a consistent threat, there are a lot of other ways severe weather affects our part of Texas. Strong thunderstorms, tornadoes and high winds are year-round possibilities. When rain picks up, we know that roads will be covered and flash floods could sweep away anything in their path.

With so many potential hazards from severe weather, we know that staying prepared is crucial for staying safe. When severe weather is predicted, keep a close eye on local news reports and start putting your emergency plans into action.

Staying Safe

Safety should always be your priority when it comes to preparing your home. If you are on the road when a storm is predicted, find a safe place to shelter or head home if you can. Avoid low-lying areas or any roads that are known to flood.

At home, bring inside anything you can and park your car in a safe place. Move things that can’t be replaced from your basement or lower level, and put important paperwork in a watertight container. If water starts coming in while you are there, stay on an upper level until the threat is passed. Flood water moves fast, and the drier you can stay the safer you will stay. Cut the power to your home if you can safely do so.

Future Prevention Strategies

If your home has taken on floodwaters, give us a call as soon as you can safely do so. We can start your recovery 247, and the faster we are able to dry things out, the less damage you will have. While we are working through your recovery, we will also help you make some decisions about strengthening your home ahead of another storm.

Bring in a professional to add grading to your yard. Slopes and organic material can ensure water runs away from your home and is absorbed quickly, even when the rain is heavy. You might also consider a sump pump for your basement or underneath your home. Sump pumps force water away from the structure of your home and can go a long way in preventing a basement flood.

With a professional restoration crew right around the corner, you can rest a little easier knowing we are always here for you. Our professionals have the training and the equipment to put your home back together fast—and help you keep it safe in the future.

We are here for all of your water disasters. Contact us day or night for a quick recovery.

campfire-style fire pit with flames emerging from the top of the logs on the dark green grass Bonfire season is upon us! SERVPRO of Westfield has your back with these helpful fire safety tips.

It might not feel like it yet, but fall is just around the corner. A break in the heat and lower humidity will be a true blessing while we get our pumpkin decorations out and look forward to crunching in the few leaves that will start to fall.

Many of us also enjoy getting outside with the family at night and gathering around the fire pit. It’s the perfect place to share stories and eat flame-kissed foods, especially when we are keeping it safe.

SERVPRO® is always available when you need us after a disaster strikes, but we also want to make sure you know how to stay safe. We want to help stop damage before it ever begins.

Tips for Starting the Fire

Make safety a priority from the start by keeping a few things you should do in mind:

Do find the best spot to have your fire. Choose a location that is in a clear area away from structures or debris, and don’t pile up the wood you plan to burn too close to the fire.

Do keep water close by in case of emergency. A bucket full of water can put out a spark that flies into the wrong places and stop flames from getting out of control. Sand or dirt can also smother out anything that leaves the fire area.

Do take a look at the weather. Check the forecast for any warnings, particularly about the wind. Even if there are no advisories, stand outside for a bit before starting the fire to ensure there are no strong winds. It doesn’t take much of a breeze to spread flames. Check burn bans for the area as well. Fire regulations can change rapidly, so make sure you check on them the day you plan to spend time around the fire.

Tips for While the Fire Is Hot

Keep your fire safe the whole evening by considering a few things you don’t want to do:

Don’t burn anything other than wood that has been treated and approved for use in a fire pit. Adding accelerants or trash to your fire can cause a dangerous situation quickly.

Don’t let anyone get too close to the fire. Put chairs around the fire a safe distance away in order to keep kids and animals away and prevent potential accidents.

Don’t make a big fire. You want to keep your fire small enough to stay contained and avoid flying embers. It only takes a single spark to start a massive blaze.

Don’t go out of eyesight of the fire until it is completely out. When you are done for the evening, pour water on your fire and stay outside until there is no trace of red, glowing embers.

Wildfire Prevention

Preventing a wildfire all starts with you. Statistically, the majority of wildfires are started by human error, so always do what you can to keep things safe. Make the fire small, use the right material and never walk away from hot embers.

If you do experience a fire on your property, call us. SERVPRO is always ready to get damage taken care of quickly and put your life back together. We will get things handled so you can continue enjoying the season.

Fire can cause a lot of damage in a short amount of time. Contact us day or night for immediate assistance.

Young boy staring at a lit match being held between his fingers SERVPRO of Westfield is here for you and your family if you experience a fire in your home or business.

Parenting is undeniably demanding, but the sheer joy of witnessing your children evolve into responsible adults makes every challenge worthwhile. One of the most important elements in nurturing this growth begins with teaching them some key lessons, even those that may bring about a little fear.

You shouldn’t skip over the topic of fire safety with your kids just because it’s difficult to talk about or scary! This information can keep them safe during childhood and throughout their entire adult lives.

While fire safety is undeniably a serious subject to bring up with younger kids, there are methods to make the conversation more kid-friendly, allowing for a fun and memorable learning experience.

Explain the Dangers of Fire

Because children learn best via experience, it’s helpful to use your own home as an example as you teach them about fire safety. Take a look around your home, highlight any potential fire hazards and explain how flames may emerge to help your kids develop a solid awareness of what they should avoid.

While discussing fire hazards in your household, mention items like matches and lighters to underscore their danger. Talking about fire hazards in a serious manner will help your kids realize that these items aren’t to be messed with and should be handed over to an adult when found.

Familiarize Them With Authority

A firefighter decked out in full safety gear can be intimidating, even for an adult. To calm this fear in your kids, try different methods to help them put their faith in important individuals such as police officers and firefighters. There are numerous ways to assist your children overcome their anxieties, such as taking them to a local event to meet firefighters or showing them images or recordings of their courageous activities.

Teach them that firefighters are lifesavers during a fire emergency. Describe their job and stress the importance of trusting them if a fire were to break out in your home. Practice interactions with these heroes, such as shouting out for help or teaching them the proper technique to stop, drop and roll.

Make a Game Plan Together

fire evacuation plan is a must-have for every household! Involve your kids in creating the exit strategy to make them feel included and to establish a plan that everyone in your home can easily follow. Turn it into a fun activity by having a contest to see who can draw the emergency plan the quickest.

It can help to point out other exits your family can use just in case your original route is blocked off during a fire. Remind your kids that using the windows as a means of escape should only be done in the event of a fire by demonstrating how to do it safely.

Once you’ve drawn out the perfect plan, locate a safe meeting place outside your home that everyone can reach after evacuating. Be sure to practice your strategy a few times a year, and don’t forget to show your kids how to call 911!

Fires can cause widespread damage. Call us for a thorough and efficient restoration.

The Risks Associated With Severe Winds | SERVPRO® of Westfield

6/5/2023 (Permalink)

img src =”storm” alt = "dense forest area with trees bending due to intense wind and rain ” > If you've suffered from storm-related damage to your home or business, make SERVPRO of Westfield your first call.

When you’re sweltering in the heat, a gentle breeze can be a saving grace. But at times, a gust of wind can catch you by surprise, and it’s not always pleasant.

Wind can be a source of immense relief or a major hazard, and it’s impossible to predict when it might come and create chaos. Knowing what to expect is the smartest way to protect yourself and your home from devastation.

Make sure you’re aware of the threats that severe winds pose, and learn how to protect your Westfield home when the wind starts to get wild.

The Different Kinds of Wind

The NOAA indicates that nearly half of all severe wind emergencies occur during thunderstorms. This makes it essential to prepare for such occurrences, particularly in the upcoming months.

Thunderstorms can generate dangerous winds of up to 60 miles per hour. These conditions are powerful enough to easily pick up and hurl heavy debris around.

Straight-line winds are one type of wind that you might encounter during thunderstorms. These winds can travel at speeds of up to 100 miles per hour and wreak havoc in any region, even in places that don’t receive rainfall.

Of course, you can’t talk about severe winds without mentioning tornadoes! Tornadoes can generate a multitude of hazardous winds, including straight-line winds, downdrafts, and micro- and macro-bursts.

Because Westfield is located in Tornado Alley, tornadoes are highly prevalent. Tornadoes are a dangerous natural catastrophe for our area due to their regularity, causing major damage and endangering homes and businesses.

Wind Damage and Prevention

Extreme winds can cause trees to topple, debris to fly, and power lines to come down. Incredibly, winds of up to 80 miles per hour can even uproot a stationary mobile home or rip residential roofs off!

To stay in the loop during severe wind events, have a way to receive weather alerts and make sure you know how to interpret them. It’s also advisable to secure any outdoor furniture to prevent it from being carried away by strong winds.

Eliminate any trees or overhanging branches that might pose a hazard to your property and roof. Clean up any outdoor debris that may be sitting around your home to avoid giving strong winds ammunition to harm your home.

When high winds have blown over your house, inspect it thoroughly to make sure you don’t miss any damage. Start by climbing up on your roof to look for any wear and tear to prevent future water damage. If you’re left with ruins after a severe wind event, reach out to SERVPRO and we’ll restore your losses.

Where to Spot Water Damage Lurking Inside Your Home | SERVPRO® of Westfield

5/9/2023 (Permalink)

img src =”bucket” alt = " blue bucket in the middle of the living area catching water falling from the ceiling ” > Think you may have water damage in your home? Here are some tips from SERVPRO of Westfield to find the source.

Water damage has numerous harmful features, such as the capacity to rapidly grow and cause substantial losses. Aside from these bothersome traits, water damage has a habit of remaining concealed until it manifests itself in the form of mold, leaks and serious damage.

Recognizing where hidden water damage most commonly occurs will help you catch these sneaky concerns before they get any worse. To keep water at bay, there are a few important spots in your home you should monitor to ensure damage hasn’t found a hiding spot.

Pay attention to these important areas to avoid a sneaky water emergency:

Your roof. When’s the last time you traveled up to your Westfield roof to check for damage? If you haven’t climbed up there in a while, you might have a hidden water problem on your hands.

Water damage can also develop extremely slowly over time on your roof, so you might notice a little leak and dismiss it only for it to develop into a significant problem when the hidden leak is left unattended.

Your attic may potentially sustain water damage that originates on the roof, resulting in another unseen hazard. Sneaky leaks and an increase in moisture make your dark and dim attic a hotspot for mold growth!

In your bathroom. Water damage, especially the stealthy sort, is almost always found in the bathroom. The bathroom fixtures we use can quickly malfunction and create water concerns that can be hard to spot.

A slow drain, a leaky faucet and water puddles are all indicators of water damage in your sink. Your bathtub and toilet could present similar issues, with water spots accumulating at the base and an excess of bathroom moisture.

Bathroom water damage isn’t usually obvious right away, so you’ll have to do some digging to make sure everything is in working order. Remember to check your plumbing as well and schedule repairs as soon as they are needed

Other appliances. Household appliances are meant to make life easier, but when they malfunction, they might end up hiding a major water emergency. Water can hide deep beneath these massive machines, keeping signs of damage hidden.

While inspecting your appliances for damage, move them away from the wall to get a better look.

It can be beneficial to perform a brief check for hidden damage before using your appliances. It can also help to replace your old appliances as soon as you can so you can avoid a future water disaster.

How to Conduct Fire Extinguisher Training in Your Houston Workplace | SERVPRO® of Westfield

4/21/2023 (Permalink)

"two fire extinguisher hanging on a tan interior wall Dealing with the aftermath of a commercial fire? SERVPRO of Westfield is your local restoration expert

No matter what type of business you run, you’re bound to have fire extinguishers carefully placed throughout the premises in case of an emergency. If a fire breaks out unexpectedly, your team’s understanding of how to use this vital tool could be the deciding factor in avoiding total disaster.

Workplace fire extinguisher training is a straightforward procedure that can prepare your team to deal with flames as soon as they appear. With a little guidance, you can instruct your team toward a fire-ready Westfield workplace!

Use our guide to arm your Westfield team with the tools they need to keep the chaos under control during a commercial fire emergency.

Start With the Fundamentals

OSHA mandates that businesses that have fire extinguishers need to instruct their commercial team on the correct way to utilize them. This will involve hands-on training paired with useful information on when to use them and the various kinds of extinguishers that are available.

Begin by teaching your staff members how to hold and aim the nozzle. Inform them to pull the pin, squeeze the handle and sweep over the flames after they’ve gotten the first step down. Notify them to remain six to eight feet away from the blaze while using the extinguisher.

Introduce the PASS acronym as a clever way to help your employees remember these steps when a crisis unfolds. Making fire extinguisher training a yearly event in the workplace is another way to help your team remember these important instructions.

Assigning roles will be most effective in keeping this lifesaving tool in the hands of experienced staff. Select the most well-trained members to be in charge of the extinguishers when the time comes to use them.

There’s a Time and a Place

Ensure your staff is aware of the distinct fire hazards located throughout your workplace that could require the help of a fire extinguisher. Go over any distinct situations or specific dangers that could lead to a fire alongside the type of extinguisher needed for every scenario. There are many different types of extinguishers, and you don’t want your team reaching for the wrong one when a fire is raging!

The most crucial point to make during your training is to know when a fire has escalated beyond the use of a single extinguisher. Although this tool can be a game-changer for businesses, some fire emergency situations can quickly get out of hand, making it risky to fight the flames alone.

Tell your staff to retreat, find safety and notify emergency personnel if a fire incident gets out of hand.

The fundamentals may appear insignificant at first, but they are the foundation of a fire-safe Westfield workplace. After you’ve mastered the hands-on fire extinguisher training, you can begin implementing a complete safety strategy to ensure every fire emergency is handled with grace!

Dealing with the aftermath of a commercial fire? Our SERVPRO specialists can restore your losses and return your workplace to its pre-fire condition.

Leaks may be concealed beneath your refrigerator or dishwasher, so you’ll need to search for indicators of damage like wet spots. Pushing larger appliances to the side once a year to perform a deep-clean is another way to catch problems before they worsen.

Your HVAC system is also a machine that could cause undetected water damage in your house. Besides calling in a professional for a checkup once a year, you should also be searching on your own for excess moisture and signs of mold growth near your vents and unit.

Your water heater is another appliance that needs consistent attention. Remember to check for puddling, excess moisture and mold around the unit just like you do for other large appliances.

Yearly or Long-Term Maintenance

Consistent maintenance can save you from serious water damage, but it also helps to have your appliances serviced on the schedule advised by the producer.

Inspect the hoses and tubing connected to your fridge, washing machine and dishwasher for punctures, kinks and other indicators of damage. Keeping parts in good condition is crucial to keeping your appliances in working order, so make sure to repair and replace as needed!

Additionally, while each appliance has a different shelf life, a good rule of thumb for replacing outdated equipment is 10 to 15 years.

To prevent unexpected, costly damage, you should act fast when you notice any appliance water damage. You could make use of your handy appliances to their fullest for many years if you catch issues early on!

Have water damage in your home from an appliance or another source? Our team is here to help, so call us day or night.

Protect Your Property in Time for Spring | SERVPRO® of Westfield

3/14/2023 (Permalink)

dark stormy clouds forming into a spring storm SERVPRO of Westfield team is always here for you, if you experience any storm damage call us right away.

Spring is almost here, and we can’t wait to get out and take in the warm weather. Before you begin planning your springtime festivities, though, make sure your home is ready for weather threats such as rainstorms, high winds and other disasters that could cause water damage.

When making your spring-cleaning list, don’t forget to include these important maintenance tasks that will protect the inside and outside of your Westfield home. Here’s a quick overview of which areas of your property require the most attention before the spring showers begin to fall:

Clean It Out

As winter slowly fades away, you should inspect a few areas that may have accumulated debris. Wind, snow, rain and ice can all cause an abundance of debris to clog your home’s gutters.

Check to make sure your gutters and downspouts are clear of debris to give excess water a way to flow freely. While you’re at it, check the vents around your property for clogs as well, as debris can easily accumulate over time.

As you look around, inspect your outdoor faucets for leakage or fractures. These red flags point toward pipes that froze up over the winter. Fix these ahead of the spring thaw to avoid a chaotic water emergency.

Fix Issues Fast

We spend a lot of time inside during the winter to avoid the chilly outdoor temperatures. This can cause you to miss crucial problems hiding up on your roof or outside your home.

We may not have had snow this year, but Westfield experiences strong winds in the winter and even stronger winds in the spring. Before spring blows in, inspect your roof for any broken shingles, damaged gutters or other indicators of wear and tear.

A faulty roof can cause major problems in the spring, leaving your home vulnerable to issues such as water damage. The quicker you are to repair these problems, the safer your home will be in the long run.

Get Ready for the Water

If you have a basement or foundation flood in the spring, a sump pump can be a lifesaver. Check that your sump pump is working properly to keep your home safe in the event of an unexpected water emergency.

Preparing ahead of time for severe spring weather is a smart idea as well. Plan ahead by replenishing your emergency kit, making any needed updates to your family’s storm safety plan and ensure you have multiple ways to stay weather-aware.

Water damage can strike at the worst moments, which is why our SERVPRO squad works around the clock! We operate 247 and can be at the scene of your Westfield disaster as soon as possible. We’ll work rapidly to restore your losses and return your home to its pre-disaster condition.

Got water damage? We are here to help 247 and can restore your home quickly.

Water Damage Can Have a Devastating Impact on Business | SERVPRO® of Westfield

3/14/2023 (Permalink)

"corner of interior wall showing signs of black mold from water damage Experienced water damage in your commercial building? SERVPRO of Westfield can help you get dried out quickly.

For businesses, water damage is a common problem. Even a small amount of water can cost you and your team time and money. A leaky sink may appear to be insignificant at first, but ignoring problem areas like this is a recipe for workplace disaster.

Water damage may appear to be an unavoidable problem, but there are numerous places to look to ensure your business isn’t flooded with water. Catching problems like leaks can be simple as long as you know exactly where to look.

3 Common Sources

Inspect these weak spots around your workplace often so you can stop water in its tracks before it leaves you with sudden downtime and expensive repairs:

1. The roof. Roof leaks can be slow and gradual or quick and abrupt as a result of stormy weather. It’s easy to overlook water loss that begins on your roof because it can occur where you can’t see it. To avoid allowing problems to slip by undetected, schedule routine inspections and cleanup after severe weather events.

2. Bathrooms. Almost 15% of water emergencies in the workplace begin when water leaks from tiny punctures along toilet and sink pipes. If you have multiple bathrooms situated throughout your building, instruct several team members to watch these areas. That way, if problems arise where you can’t see them, they’ll be able to identify them quickly before they worsen.

3. Water heaters/HVAC/boilers. Equipment that is attached to a water line commonly leaks due to clogs or malfunctions. Standing water surrounding your HVAC systems or a rise in water pressure are signs of a water emergency in its early stages.

Take Preventive Steps

Commercial water loss can be devastating to deal with, but a rapid response can help to keep things under control. Time and money can be saved when you work to catch water damage before it escalates.

Building a plan of prevention is one of the first things you should do as you make efforts to avoid business water damage. SERVPRO of Westfield can offer a helping hand as well by creating an Emergency Ready Plan tailored to the needs of your business.

A timely response is the best way to deal with water damage before it gets any worse. Jump into action as fast as possible when problems arise, and contact SERVPRO if you’re left with a mess. We can rapidly restore your losses so you and your team can get back on track!

Stay Safe and Warm During the Winter Season | SERVPRO® of Westfield

1/24/2023 (Permalink)

”heater” alt = "a small electric heater in a living room” Call SERVPRO of Westfield if you experience any smoke, soot or fire damage.

The freezing season has arrived, and you’ve likely brought your space heater out of storage or switched on the heat in your home to prepare for Westfield’s plummeting temperatures. Heating your home can be as simple as flipping a switch, but all it takes is one small mistake for these helpful tools to spark flames.

Westfield might not be visited by a snowstorm like the blizzard that caught us off-guard back in 2021, but you’ll still need to keep warm! Staying cozy for the winter is easy as long as you keep safety in mind.

<h3basics">Furnace Basics

Most houses include a furnace and an HVAC system that sends warm air flowing in every room of the home. To keep your furnace working this winter, you’ll need to upkeep it often. Check your furnace for any problems and give it a good cleaning to keep dust and debris from sparking flames.

Replacing your HVAC system’s air filter is another vital maintenance task that should be completed at the beginning of each new season. A clean, well-maintained HVAC system and furnace will ensure that clean air is circulated throughout your home.

<h3safety">Fireplace Safety

If your Westfield home is decked out with a fireplace, you’re probably aware of its ease of use and convenience. This helpful tool might add a comfortable atmosphere to your home, but it can turn dangerous quickly if you don’t upkeep it.

Whether you use an artificial or wood-burning fireplace, you need to clean it and have it checked for issues each season.

If your home uses a wood-burning fireplace, thoroughly wipe down every inch to remove smoke and soot residue and inspect your chimney for any obstructions. If you fire up an artificial fireplace, remove its cover and clean the inside and outside to ensure it’s free of dust accumulation.

<h3heaters">Portable Heaters

If you get out a space heater in the winter, you’re sure to enjoy its ability to warm up any space within minutes. This device is really useful when it’s frigid outside, but its risks must be considered to ensure you’re using it safely.

Avoid sparking flames by keeping your space heater three feet from flammable items. Make sure to turn off your space heater before going to bed, and if you have children, keep an eye on them while it is on.

Avoid using extension cables because they can overheat. Instead, plug your space heater straight into a wall outlet.

Keeping your home warm throughout winter is easy as long as you work to prevent flames in the process! One small mishap can easily lead to a fire calamity when utilizing heating sources.

If you experience fire damage this season, give us a call at SERVPRO of Westfield for immediate assistance. We’re here 247 when you need us!

Make Waterproofing Your Home a Top Priority in the New Year | SERVPRO® of Westfield

1/19/2023 (Permalink)

"water failing from a sink do to a clogged drain” Have water damage in your home? Contact SERVPRO of Westfield for quick and professional restoration.

The beginning of a new year is the ideal time to take control of your life and pinpoint any areas that need a little improvement. You typically might only set goals for yourself, but have you considered making a resolution list for your home, too?

As you organize your 2023 game plan, leave some room for water damage protection.

Water damage is a common challenge many homeowners face, but with a few new changes to your daily routine, you can safeguard the home you love. Here are the reasons why waterproofing your property is so vital, as well as the measures you can take to get started.

What Causes Water Damage?

As you start protecting your home, it’s a good idea to be aware of the places water can sneak in. Water can infiltrate your home from the inside and outside.

Gutters clogged with debris and heavy rainfall are two common ways water seeps in from the outside, while household appliances and bathroom equipment create leaks from within your home.

Tattered pipes or aged caulk around your windows and doors are two other ways water might find its way into your home. When leakage like this goes unnoticed, mold growth and a weakened infrastructure are sure to emerge.

Water damage requires prompt attention, or else damage will develop and only intensify over time. The good news is that detecting leakage is simple as long as you know what to look for.

How to Prevent Damage

Water damage prevention may appear to be a difficult endeavor, but there are many simple ways to make big changes to protect your home. Catching a leak early is one of the most efficient methods for staying on top of water damage, and regular inspection makes it even easier.

As you snoop around for sneak water leaks, check your bathrooms and kitchen every now and then for damp areas or mold growth.

When it’s raining, check your windows to ensure water isn’t dripping inside. Because water damage might emit a foul odor, you can also sniff around to find the source of the problem.

Upkeeping your roof often to make sure your shingles are in place can protect your entire home from damage. Don’t forget to clear your gutters and downspouts of debris while you’re up there!

Maintaining your roof is particularly important when it comes to extreme weather, one of the most aggressive sources of water damage. Here in Westfield, we’ve seen weather threats of all kinds, with the most common being flooding and hurricanes. Severe weather, like many of the examples above, can be scary, but you can prepare your home to ensure that no water gets inside.

Grading your yard may help protect your home from large amounts of water when the weather turns sour. Create an incline of soil to send water flowing far from your newly waterproofed home.

This year, you can make significant improvements in all aspects of your life while also avoiding lengthy and costly repairs!

Count on SERVPRO for Professional Odor-Removal Services | SERVPRO® of Westfield

1/19/2023 (Permalink)

"a SERVPRO crew setting up machines to clean a kitchen If you experience an odor or any other damage inside your home, call SERVPRO of Westfield day or night.

With multiple locations across the country, SERVPRO provides cleaning and restoration services for residential and commercial properties suffering from damage inflicted by unexpected emergencies. One issue that our team frequently tackles while working to restore property damage is the development of irritating odors.

Recovering after your home or business has been devastated by disaster is a complex process. Following these events, a persistent smell may initially seem like a minor problem given the extensive damage you are dealing with, but it has the potential to worsen significantly over time.

No matter how severe the damage, disasters can develop an odor that will only spread further the longer you wait on repairs. Even if your home appears to be spotless, stubborn smells can sneak into areas you’d never imagine.

The good news is: We can help you out if you’re fighting an odor that just won’t leave! Here’s how our expert team works to rid your property of lingering odors.

Odor Removal Techniques

Chemicals, gases or small particles in the air all produce nasty smells. As soon as their source is taken care of, our specialists utilize advanced deodorization technologies in conjunction with numerous products and techniques that can make your home odor-free.

Some of these include:

Masking agents. While this isn’t our main method of removal, these substances can hide the smell to create a more tolerable environment as we prepare our next plan of action.

Filtration agents. Absorption agents help to soak up any odors lingering around furniture and construction supplies. These agents steal odors out of the air and lock them in place once they travel through the filtration agents.

Disinfectants and sanitizers. These compounds are designed to destroy and eradicate any bacteria and fungi that might be generating odors inside the affected locations.

While there are several other practices we use to free your home of persistent odors, these three are essential components of the restoration process.

The Signature 4-Step Process

The SERVPRO procedure for odor removal consists of four major steps:

1. Remove the source. Until the source of the smell has been found and disposed of, debris tainted with odor-emitting remnants will only allow the odor to persist. For this reason, our professionals will begin by addressing the source when possible.

2. Clean residue from surfaces. Following the removal of the odor origin, it is essential to deep-clean and deodorize all areas. Small particles and residue will continue to emit unwanted scents if not adequately cleaned.

3. Recreate the odor-causing conditions. Our professionals will apply a deodorizer in the same way that odor-creating substances initially infiltrated your home. For example, if water was the source of the problem, we would use “deodorizing water” during this phase.

4. Seal exposed surfaces. The use of sealants might be necessary in more extreme cases to keep odor-producing from creeping back inside your home. Our team undergoes this phase when odor elimination efforts become too expensive or impossible to execute.

The solution to a persistent, stubborn smell is a rapid response. Our team can get your odor issue under control to keep costs low and safeguard your property from damage. When your property is devastated by disaster, SERVPRO of Westfield is right down the road waiting to help you out!

If you experience an odor or other damage inside your home or business, call us at any time, 247. We have the training and equipment to quickly get your property back in operation.

Get Ready for Winter in Westfield | SERVPRO® of Westfield

12/12/2022 (Permalink)

"side by side view of a hot and cold thermometer " If you experience damage due to a winter storm, call SERVPRO of Westfield. We have the experience and equipment for any issue.

This year, winter makes its official arrival on Dec. 21, and based on where you fall on the map, this chilly time of year can look very different. While some areas are visited by winter without realizing it since the only change is a slight temperature drop, other places, like Westfield, experience an unpredictable season.

Winter creates a distinct variety of hazards that are capable of wreaking havoc on your home and ruining the winter experience for your family.

Thankfully, as long as you are aware of the many threats winter could pose, you can effectively protect your property and the people you love this year.

Winter Around the Nation

Freezing, damp, mild and chilly are a few terms used to describe winter weather, and depending on where you live, the words you use could be pretty different.

For places in the Midwest and East Coast, winter temperatures plummet to record lows, and severe snowfall is expected for most of the season. On the West Coast, temperatures are usually cool and rainfall is a much bigger concern than a blizzard.

Even though these forecasts will vary somewhat depending on the area, it is smart to prepare for the unexpected to keep damage to a minimum.

Winter Around Westfield

Winter in Westfield can certainly be a mixed bag. While some seasons are moderate with only a minor shift in temperature, others hit us with powerful snow and ice storms that cause widespread power outages in our area.

This year’s winter season is expected to be similarly chilly to last year’s, but fortunately, it shouldn’t be any worse. No matter what winter decides to throw our way this year, it’s best to prepare for the unexpected.

Get Prepared

A great way to get started when preparing for whatever winter has in store is by learning about the various types of winter storms. After this, you should ensure you have two or more ways to receive local weather reports.

One of these sources should be accessible without power so that if a winter storm strikes Westfield unexpectedly and the power grid falters, you can keep informed!

Additionally, an emergency kit could be a lifesaver if winter weather hits hard this season. Make sure to pack your kit full of essentials and include any items you might need to endure the cold.

Regardless of how frigid it gets this winter, weatherproofing your windows and doors is an important task that can prevent a water damage emergency and save you some money on your electric bills.

When it comes to winterizing your home, taking care of any roof damage, removing any overhanging branches, caulking any gaps around your windows and doors and insulating your attic can make all the difference.

Make sure to stay warm and enjoy the beauty of winter this season inside a safe, prepared home. Take measures to secure your property and give SERVPRO a call if winter weather causes you any trouble. We can rapidly restore your winter-related damage and get you back home in no time.

If you experience damage in a winter storm, call us. We have the experience and equipment to get your home back to normal.

Take Control of Commercial Water Damage to Protect Your Business | SERVPRO® of Westfield

10/20/2022 (Permalink)

a zoomed in view of a wooden floor showing signs of water damage SERVPRO of Westfield are your local commercial restoration company. We will always be here to help and get you back in business

Water damage can strike out of the blue and have a devastating impact on your workplace.

Commercial water damage can be an expensive mess for business owners. Internal flood sources like a leaky pipe or plumbing overflow can result in unexpected downtime, ruined equipment and compromised infrastructure. Natural sources of flooding are another unpredictable reason you might find water seeping into your commercial building.

Westfield businesses should prepare for local natural flooding threats like torrential rain, hurricanes, tropical storms and other weather conditions. The best way to get ready for these hazards is to assess your risk level based on where your building is located.

Whatever the cause of your water emergency, it’s critical that you understand how to react to safeguard your company. This guide can help you understand how to quickly get the problem under control and reduce your risk of damage as much as possible.

Know Your Building’s Layout

Figure out where the various water cutoff points are around your building. Make sure you understand where to find important places like your fire sprinkler system or your main water valve so you can shut them off when necessary.

It’s helpful if multiple members of your team know this information as well, so any emergency can be kept under control. This will ensure the source of your water emergency is found quickly to keep your building safe from any damage.

Know the Types of Water Involved

When faced with water damage, the kind of water produced can help you assess how dangerous the incident is. You’ll be better able to protect the people in your building if you understand what you’re up against:

White water: Plumbing issues are generally to blame for this kind of flooding. You can safely manage this water yourself in small quantities since it’s not regarded as contaminated.

Gray water: This kind of water is caused by overflowing toilet tanks and sink drains. Although it is contaminated, the water is not recognized as hazardous.

Black water: Black water that is severely contaminated is typically produced by sewage overflows and storm flooding. You should contact a professional to take care of this hazardous water.

Take Action Quickly

When water infiltrates your property, attempt to pinpoint the source and turn it off as fast as possible. To speed up the drying process, open your doors and windows. After this, notify anyone in the building and let them know that the impacted areas are off-limits.

Following these measures, you need to closely record any obvious property damage. This will make the insurance claim process much faster, and you’ll be able to determine which areas of your structure require reinforcement.

Remember to Be Patient

The apparent water damage might be only a small portion of an even larger issue. Your building might have hidden water damage in places you can’t see.

When water creates problems in your workplace, contact SERVPRO of Westfield for a rapid response. Our skilled restoration crew can quickly dry out your facility and get you back on track using cutting-edge equipment and years of expertise.

The degree of destruction will influence how long your restoration journey will last, so try to be patient as our team restores your building. You and your team will be back to a water-free business in no time!

House fires are devastating, but thankfully, most of them are preventable because they’re related to manmade causes. But while house fires are typically manmade, there are also natural threats that could damage your home—and they’re less preventable.

In 2020 alone, there were over 70,000 damage claims brought on by lightning strikes. Since personal lightning strikes are a rather uncommon occurrence, you don’t need to worry too much about getting hit, but your house is considerably more susceptible. When lightning strikes, it’s capable of destroying trees, blowing out your power and even starting fires.

About 6,000 lightning strikes are thought to occur every minute. We should all be prepared to defend our properties and ourselves before a storm approaches because no one is entirely safe from lightning’s impact.

What Is Lightning?

Lightning is a huge bolt of electrical current that occurs between clouds in the air and the ground. Lightning is known to strike during thunderstorms, but it can also happen during a volcanic eruption, severe wildfires or even a major snowstorm.

We typically relate lightning to extreme weather, but it can strike even when the sky is clear and the air is calm. “Dry lightning” happens in the absence of rain and is a common cause of raging wildfires. As we prepare for storms, we also need to consider the possibility of fires.

Protecting Your Home From Lightning Fires

Lightning can substantially damage your home, especially if it sparks a fire. Fires can spark from either the heat of the strike or the electrical charge created by the strike.

It’s possible that a fire that results from a strike won’t be instantly obvious as it will usually ignite between your walls or up in your attic. But you are likely to hear the lightning strike, which will sound like an explosive boom. Inspect for burning after the strike, and notify the fire department as soon as you spot black stains or smell smoke.

A lighting rod is a helpful tool that can keep lightning from sparking flames. Installing a lighting rod could help direct the heat and energy of a strike away from your home and straight down into the ground.

When Lightning Strikes Nearby

Lighting is a leading cause of wildfires and other fires that spark outdoors. Your risk of lightning fires is influenced by both where you live and the season, but close to 9,000 fires are created by lightning strikes every year.

Maintain a tidy yard clear of dead or dying plants, and think about utilizing defensible zones to shelter your house from flames. Your home should also include smoke detectors on every floor and in every bedroom so you can be aware of any flames that start.

If you’re facing the aftermath of a fire, our SERVPRO team can take care of the damage. With years of experience and the use of innovative techniques, we strive to make stressful situations like this quick and painless. We will keep you updated every step of the way as we restore your home to its pre-fire state.

Protecting Your Property From Flooding | SERVPRO® of Westfield

10/20/2022 (Permalink)

a group of residential homes with major flooding in back yards Experienced water damage in your home? Call SERVPRO of Westfield to get the restoration process started right away.

Not everyone realizes how important flood protection is. Some areas that are at lower risk of flooding do not have resources available to help with cleanup and restoration, so preventing property damage in the first place is an important step in mitigating repair costs.

Fortunately, you can take steps to protect your home both inside and out. Understanding the regional risks we face is important to understanding how and why preparation is key.

Texas is at risk of severe storms, which can cause flood conditions. Excessive water can enter your home and create damage, potentially promoting mold growth over time.

Now that you understand why flood protection is important in Westfield, you can take the steps to protect your home and property.

Protecting Your Property Outside Your Home

Take the time to prepare your home outside to prevent damage to the inside of your home.

Keeping gutters clear of debris allows water to freely flow through them. Without an obstruction, water is less likely to puddle around the foundation and enter the home in the first place.

Creating a nice landscape on your property can also prevent flood damage. A large garden pulls water into the soil, to the roots and away from the surface. Mulch can also create a slope that pushes away from your home, which helps protect the structure and foundation of your home.

Financially investing in a few upgrades when possible is also a good idea. Anchoring fuel tanks and adding rain barrels can be helpful during severe weather. The rain barrels collect the rainwater, which can then be used to water the plants in your garden!

Protecting Inside Your Home

Shoring up your foundation and sealing your basement should be the first things on your list to protect the inside of your home. Seal the cracks in your home’s foundation as soon as possible and purchase a sump pump for your basement.

While these are financial investments, they are important for protecting your property from damage and reducing higher costs in the long run.

When it comes to preventing flooding inside your home, regular home maintenance goes a long way.

The top reasons that homes flood from the inside include failed and worn plumbing. A leak sensor, which may be offered with your home security system, can help minimize the risk of water damage.

Make sure to keep your emergency plan handy and easily accessible for when flooding occurs. Minimize damage to precious items, including papers and irreplaceable photographs, by storing them up high in waterproof containers.

Understand the Different Kinds of Weather Alerts | SERVPRO® of Westfield

8/18/2022 (Permalink)

a red and white severe weather alert sign If you suspect any damage to your home from a recent storm, call SERVPRO of Westfield.

There are many different types of weather warnings, around 42 kinds to be exact. Each one is organized into one of seven distinct categories. It’s best to be informed about these alerts before severe weather strikes!

Understanding these weather warnings can help you prepare for any weather emergency that may affect our community. You’ll also know how to prepare your home to withstand any disaster.

Understanding all types of weather is important, but understanding what weather might strike Westfield is even more critical for staying safe.

How Alerts Are Issued

So, how are these weather alerts issued in the first place? How is the intensity, position and duration of a storm monitored if weather forecasts are just forecasts? The issuance of these warnings is influenced by a number of variables.

The National Weather Service is responsible for forecasting weather conditions and issuing any warnings when necessary. To ensure these warnings are location-specific, there are six regional offices and hundreds of sub-offices located around the country that send out these alerts. You’ll find your warnings in Westfield coming from the Southern Region headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas.

Satellite radar, weather balloons, seismic activity meters and even ocean buoys are a few of the tools used by NWS meteorologists and other employees to develop forecasts. While the type of data used varies depending on the intensity of the weather condition, the primary objective is to create a prediction that is as accurate as possible.

The Most Important Alerts to Understand

Understanding the distinction between a “watch” and a “warning” is critical when understanding these weather warnings. This is terminology that is used in most weather alerts, including thunderstorms, hurricanes and strong winds.

watch indicates conditions are being monitored and could become severe, so you should take necessary action to keep safe. A warning is given in a smaller community, like a county or city, whereas a watch is issued in a larger area.

A warning means that a severe storm is approaching your area and you should take shelter immediately.

Understanding the many types of weather your community encounters regularly can help you know what to do when these weather alerts are issued during severe weather. Because Texas is a coastal state, residents in the Westfield region are vulnerable to hurricanes. You’ll receive hurricane advisories as soon as conditions develop within our community.

Protecting Your Home During a Storm

The best approach to protecting yourself and your property from weather threats is to become familiar with the many kinds of weather alerts, but there are a few other actions you can take to prepare your home for severe weather.

Cleaning your gutters and fastening any outdoor furniture is a simple way to safeguard your home for severe weather conditions such as flooding or strong winds. Prepare a shelter for your family with essential items and have an evacuation plan ready in case of an emergency.

Give SERVPRO a call if your home has been damaged by severe weather, such as hurricane-force winds or a flood. We can devise and carry out an effective restoration plan to restore as much of your home as possible.

Understanding what kinds of weather threats might impact our hometown is the best way to prepare for severe weather. Learn the many warnings that may be issued during severe weather so that you and your home are prepared for any crisis.

Keeping Any Backyard Fire Contained With These Safeguards | SERVPRO® of Westfield

8/18/2022 (Permalink)

a close up view of a bright campfire burning at night If you have experienced fire or smoke damage, contact SERVPRO of Westfield.

There’s no better way to spend the summer evening than relaxing by the fire with your family in your own backyard. S’mores, scary stories and hot dogs are just a few ways you can enjoy this special night.

We use these backyard fires and campgrounds for many reasons, such as our own entertainment, preparing a meal, keeping bugs away or as a way to clear our yard of debris, but even the most contained fires still have their own set of hazards. The National Park Service states that nearly 85% of wildfires are ignited by humans.

Texas is the second most common state in the United States for wildfires to burn. In 2021, there were around 5,600 wildfires. Many of these fires are started by careless debris burning, but dry conditions allow these flames to get even more out of control.

Of course, you’re still able to burn your debris, toast your marshmallows, light your tiki torches and barbecue your burgers, if local laws allow it. Having safeguards in place every time you burn can allow you to minimize the accidental spread of flames and enjoy your backyard fires.

Recreational Fire Hazards

Any open flame can be hazardous, but campfires, fire pits, grills and fireworks are some of the most prevalent ways outdoor fires are ignited. Grills are responsible for an average of 8,800 home fires annually, usually caused by improper usage due. Before starting up your grill, check the gas lines and propane tanks that fuel it, and always be sure to supervise your grill before and after use

When constructing a campfire, place it in a safe area away from any buildings or vehicles, and only use a match or lighter to light your fire. Once your campfire is started, make sure you only use wood to keep the flames going, and always watch the embers even after you’re done with your fire.

Fire pits are an easy way to create a camp-like feel in your own backyard, but this equipment should be used with the same precautions as you would a normal campfire. If you’re able to move your fire pit, keep it off of a wooden deck and away from areas with an overhang.

While it may seem like a convenient way to get rid of construction or household debris, you should only burn approved firewood.

And if plan on lighting fireworks to celebrate, make sure to set them off in an open area and give them room to land away from vehicles, buildings or other debris. Westfield’s firework laws allow you to buy and possess fireworks, but you should refrain from using them in certain areas, like near hospitals, churches and schools.

Other Outdoor Fire Hazards

Fire and flammable materials still have a purpose even with their hazards. During the fall, if your yard collects a number of leaves and you don’t have a convenient way to dispose of them, burning your yard debris may be the easiest way to keep a tidy yard.

Before you begin burning, make sure your local authorities allow you to burn debris in the first place. Understand your area’s burn bans, and apply for a permit if necessary. In Westfield, conditions are particularly dry at the moment and officials have issued a burn ban until further notice. So, hold off on burning until local regulations say it’s safe to do so.

Clearing your yard of dead leaves and yard trimmings is actually a beneficial way to safeguard your home from wildfires, as well as strategic landscaping to slow the spread of flames before they reach your home. Knowing what is safe to burn and understanding the basic fire safety principles can help you keep any outdoor fire contained.

We all utilize our sheds and garages to store materials like gasoline, but irresponsible storage can have a devastating impact. Be sure to only store your gas in approved containers, and keep these containers in an area where kids can’t reach them.

Gas should only be used for its intended purpose as well, so even if you’re having trouble lighting that backyard fire, don’t turn to your gasoline can for any help.

Before lighting any fire outside, check our local weather forecast and regulations. If conditions are very dry or if winds are strong, save your marshmallows for a better day and reschedule your campfire.

And if a backyard fire inflicts damage on your home, contact our experts at SERVPRO. Our team has experience in dealing with the damage left over from smoke and flames, and we make it our goal to restore your home to its pre-fire condition as fast as we can.

Burn safely outdoors. And save some chocolate for us! If you have experienced fire or smoke damage, contact us today to get restoration started faster.

3 Ways Storms Can Damage Your Home | SERVPRO® of Westfield

8/18/2022 (Permalink)

a large lightning strike off in the distance of a dark sky When you suffer storm-related damage to your home or business, make SERVPRO of Westfield your first call.

Hazardous storms frequently cause major concerns for homeowners. While most current homes are constructed to take on these severe threats, most every home or property will experience some type of damage when severe weather rolls through town.

Depending on the time of year and the type of storm, strong winds and wind-related calamities can create lightning, flash floods, cold rain and snowstorms, which all present a serious risk to your property and the structure of your home.

Based on the kinds of storms and events taking place, various sorts of damage could affect your home. The surrounding terrain of your property, the region’s geography and the quality of your home’s base or construction materials are just a few of the many variables that affect how much damage could occur. (We’ll admit, there is also a component of chance.)

While being aware of the various weather dangers that could arise is beneficial, understanding the potential effects on our particular area is far more crucial. Your Westfield home is vulnerable to weather such as severe thunderstorms, floods and hurricanes.

Living in a storm-damaged home is never recommended unless safety experts give their approval. Various kinds of damage will be apparent straight away, but other kinds may not be visible to the naked eye.

To help you better plan for them, let’s explore the three primary forms of storm damage:

Wind

When violent wind gusts that blow at absurdly high speeds strike buildings, wind damage can occur. The most frequent cause of strong winds is tornadoes and hurricanes, although even thunderstorms can generate gusts of up to 100 mph.

Debris scattered throughout your yard may be lifted by strong winds and tossed into your home or cars. You must remain indoors during storms and stay away from any windows and exterior walls in case glass breaks or the walls are pierced by flying debris.

You can also take precautions ahead of the storm to reduce the amount of wind-related damage. Reduce the amount of material a storm has to work with by keeping your property free of any limbs, big rocks, loose furniture and dead trees.

Water

Water damage is a very frequent occurrence both during and following a storm. Even a small storm can produce rain showers that cause water to collect around your home and then seep inside through the seals on your doors and windows.

If there is enough water present, it may potentially seep into your foundation and severely damage its structural integrity.

Consider using creative landscaping methods that send water away from your home instead of amassing next to it to reduce the amount of damage that water may do to your property. Alternately, you may put in a rain garden, which is a smart way to brighten your yard and keep all that rainwater from becoming a major issue.

For your gutters to function as intended and keep the weight of water off your roof, you should regularly clean them out. Water can gather in clogged gutters and make its way into your house from the top, seeping down to the bottom.

Impact

Another typical form of storm damage that can have disastrous effects on your home is “impact damage.” Strong winds can cause trees to fall or debris to be blown into your property, causing significant harm. In essence, this type of damage encompasses anything that hits (or impacts) your home or other items on your property.

Trimming branches near your property and making sure any dead trees are cleared are the best ways to prevent this kind of catastrophe from happening.

Weather-related catastrophes cost more than $145 billion in destruction in the United States alone in 2021. By preventing these common disasters before they start, these techniques can help you safeguard your home and save you a ton of time and money.

Give SERVPRO of Westfield a call if your home is impacted by the hazards of a severe storm. Our restoration specialists are prepared to handle any size damage with cutting-edge technology and years of expertise.

When you suffer storm-related damage to your home or business, it’s important that you know who to call! Contact us today to get your storm damage restoration started faster.

Combat Storms With These Steps | SERVPRO® of Westfield

6/16/2022 (Permalink)

"a dark cloudy sky with lighting strikes off in the distance" If you discover storm damage to your home or business, reach out to SERVPRO of Westfield right away.

Severe weather is a scary issue to confront as a homeowner. In the United States, there are approximately 100,000 thunderstorms each year. This means it’s likely you will encounter severe storms a few times in your time as a homeowner. In Westfield, they are likely to occur 60 days out of the year!

Westfield can expect the most severe storms to occurring between May and October, so they’re straight-ahead. These strong storms are accompanied by flooding, hail storms, heavy rain and occasional tornadoes. This type of extreme weather is known for wreaking havoc on homes and the people caught in its path.

The unfortunate truth is there’s nothing we can do to prevent severe weather, but we can take steps to prepare for the impact. That might include putting together an emergency kit, a communications strategy and a plan for the aftermath.

No doubt, preparing for these things will at least give you a better shot at reducing their impact on you and your home.

Your Severe Weather Communication Strategy

When the weather turns bad, keeping in touch with your family and being able to receive communications from authorities is crucial. You should have multiple ways to receive alerts from officials, including a cell phone and an NOAA weather radio.

In addition, you should recognize the difference between warnings and watches so you know when to seek shelter as quickly as possible.

You also need to work on a communication strategy for your household. Include important items like where to go when the weather turns bad (perhaps a basement or bathroom). Moreover, plan for communication in case one or more household members are away from home during a storm so each person knows when and how to check in.

Your Severe Weather Emergency Kit

Take the time to put together an emergency kit that holds all your essentials. Include food, water and first-aid supplies, preparing for at least three days of sheltering in place.

That way you will not have to worry about having enough necessities to last until authorities rescue you. Keep the kit stored in your at-home storm shelter area.

Your Severe Weather Aftermath Checklist

Here are the steps you want to take after the storm: Evaluate your storm safety plan and figure out which areas could be improved for the next time severe weather happens. Ask for everyone in the household’s input on each element.

Next, once it is safe to do so, go around your property and look for any damage. You may notice water damage in vulnerable areas like your roof or window and door seals.

If there is damage, don’t fret! SERVPRO of Westfield is available 247 to meet all your restoration needs. We provide a quick response to save as much of your home as possible.

If you discover storm damage to your home or business, you can count on SERVPRO to handle the restoration. We’re here 247 to spring into action—get in touch with us today.

A Clean Home Is an Effective Way to Prevent Fires | SERVPRO® of Westfield

6/16/2022 (Permalink)

"interior view of a room with items completely destroyed by fire " If your home is damaged in a house fire, SERVPRO of Westfield is here to help. Contact us for any fire restoration need.

House fires are without a doubt one of the most common and disastrous catastrophes in the country. Around seven fire-related fatalities occur each day in the United States, thus taking safeguards is vital. Since the beginning of the year, the American Red Cross has responded to more than 20,000 residential fires.

The first step in preventing fire threats is to take action to protect your Westfield home. Paying attention in the kitchen and checking your smoke alarms are two of the more obvious fire prevention measures, but you may not realize that tidying your house can also help to limit the spread of flames:

Create a Defensible Space in Your Yard

Westfield residents are at high risk of wildfires. Creating a fire-prevention layout on your lawn and cleaning up around the yard are two steps you may take to prevent outside fires from reaching your home.

Due to the prevalence of wildfires in California, the state has developed defensible space zones, requiring a yard arrangement that works as a protective barrier against fires.

Practice this in your Westfield yard by planting trees and plants away from your house and removing any branches that may be hanging over it. Utilize fire-resistant landscaping, such as hardwood and maple trees or yucca plants, to help keep a wildfire from spreading.

Clear the Clutter

Everyone’s house gets messy now and then, but allowing the mess to compromise your safety is potentially deadly. Too much clutter in your home creates a safety risk to you and everyone else in the house in the event of a fire.

A cluttered home with excess storage might hinder a speedy escape in the event of a house fire. Piles of clothes or towels also act as fuel to a flame; in the event of a fire, these materials will only help it spread.

Take care to clear out piles of anything flammable, including clothes, paper and books. This is especially important around appliances, outlets and heating devices.

Keep It Clean & Keep It Safe

A clean home can be difficult to achieve, but keep in mind that your efforts to clean your space can result in a safer living environment. Making it a habit to toss things away and dust around the house are simple actions that will make a significant difference if an unexpected fire occurs.

Dryers cause thousands of fires each year, with a dirty lint screen being the most common cause. Lint is flammable, resulting in a deadly combination of heat from your dryer. Dryer lint should be cleared from your dryer screen after each load of laundry.

Remember, a clean home is a happy home! A clutter-free environment will not only provide you with peace of mind, but it will also significantly minimize your risk of accidental fires occurring.

What Are the Most Common Causes of Workplace Damage? | SERVPRO® of Westfield

6/16/2022 (Permalink)

a large commercial building with extensive damage to roof and siding SERVPRO of Westfield is your local commercial disaster team. Contact us to learn more about our commercial damage restoration services.

When it comes to managing a commercial operation, business owners bear a great deal of responsibility. They are always busy, whether tending to customers or managing personnel.

And there are other items on their plates, too—workplace emergencies are something that all business owners will face at some point while running their company.

Businesses are the backbone of our country, and when one is impacted by an emergency such as a natural disaster, it affects everyone. Unfortunately, events like this have the ability to permanently shut down companies.

Every year, natural disasters wreak devastation in parts of the United States. According to the NCEI, the country has suffered an annual average of $153 billion in damages As natural disasters become more common, this number will only rise.

Tornadoes, floods, severe storms and even hurricanes are all potential weather hazards in Westfield. Hurricane Harvey wreaked havoc on Westfield in 2017. Many businesses were forced to close as a result of the hurricane’s destruction.

We’ve included some information about the most typical causes of a workplace damage below.

Water Damage

Water damage can appear in a number of places within your business. Whether caused by the weather or a plumbing leak, these types of damages can be quite costly to your company.

Flash floods can occur as a result of severe weather or when dams break. Flood water can suddenly flood your property, causing harm to anything it comes into contact with. Determine if your business is in a flood zone and monitor weather conditions in flood-prone locations.

Leaks in your building due to something like an appliance failure may appear insignificant at first, but they can soon escalate into a major issue. Check for leaks near any equipment that uses water and maintain your plumbing to ensure no leaks occur. Checking for leaks before they become a problem can save your property from mold and structural damage.

Storm Damage

Storms can be devastating to businesses, leaving owners with damage that must be repaired. Some storms are so severe that businesses are never able to reopen. Strong winds can inflict irrevocable damage to your property during severe storms.

Wind gusts of 10 to 15 mph are common during storms, but severe storms can produce dangerous wind speeds of up to 100 mph. The strong gusts produce a 100-mile destruction path that can uproot trees and pull buildings’ roofs off.

Before a storm, inspect your building for any hazards that could be picked up by strong winds and hit your property during a storm. Check for any cracks or breaches in your building and get them sealed to keep the outside weather out.

Know Who to Call

Commercial damage can be detrimental to both business owners and the surrounding community. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to ensure that your commercial property is prepared to withstand any crisis.

We Can Tackle Your Home’s Water Damage | SERVPRO® of Westfield

4/20/2022 (Permalink)

"a bathroom sink showing signs of a water leak" No matter the damage sustained, SERVPRO of Westfield has the tools and team to help your home return to a normal state quickly.

You already know that SERVPRO is the most trusted name in restoration, but we want to help you become the first line of defense for your home. One type of damage you’re likely to encounter as a homeowner is flooding or water damage.

This could start out with something as simple as a leaky faucet that turns into something much worse. The average household leak can waste up to 10,000 gallons of water in a year.

Water damage progresses rapidly, seeping into floors, walls and soft surfaces. It’s crucial to address the issue right away to produce the best results.

We have simplified the water damage timeline down to these key points you need to know:

In the First 24 Hours

Your Westfield home could have up to a one in four chance of a flood damaging it within a 30-year period in a high-risk area.

The first 24 to 48 hours after flooding or water damage are crucial. Certain items will immediately fall victim to water’s disastrous effects. Some paper-based belongings, porous materials and soft furnishings, will be seriously harmed by water exposure.

In addition, mold can begin to develop within this timeframe. Knowing what to do next is essential.

SERVPRO’s expertise and “restore vs. replace” mentality can help you save money while preserving precious keepsakes that can’t be replaced. If any materials cannot be successfully restored, this will be communicated to you. These materials are typically removed as soon as possible to expedite the drying of all restorable materials.

Within the First Week

Once you have surpassed the first 24 to 48 hours, the damage will get much worse and quickly. Mold will make an appearance throughout your home’s structure, thriving off of excess moisture.

Additionally, porous surfaces, such as wood surfaces and walls, will become increasingly compromised, and metal surfaces will start corroding.

After One Week

It’s best to get help far before this point, but we understand that things happen that are beyond your control. By this point, there may be catastrophic or even irreversible damage, and the likelihood of structural decay will be high, but SERVPRO is here for you regardless.

How SERVPRO Will Help

Whatever you need our experts to take on, they will. SERVPRO’s restoration process begins with the first call, preferably within the first 24 hours. Service work normally starts with a thorough extraction of water. This helps prevent the spread of water in the structure and reduces drying time.

There’s a strong chance floors, furniture and other belongings will require cleaning, sanitizing and deodorization. After the bulk of the water has been removed, our specialists will use industry-leading drying equipment to remove the water you can’t see.

After these initial steps, your home may need construction work to get your property back to its preloss condition. This step could include minor repairs or rebuilding entire areas of your home.

Take advantage of our full services by allowing us to handle both the initial damage mitigation and rebuilding the affected areas. SERVPRO will keep you up to date on every step and have you back in your home or business in no time.

Regardless of the type of water damage sustained, SERVPRO has the tools and teams to help your home or business recover. Contact us 247 when you need a dependable team to help you recover.

Can You Identify the 3 Types of Floods and Their Causes? | SERVPRO® of Westfield

4/5/2022 (Permalink)

"a street completely submerged in water with a flood warning sign sitting in roadway" Regardless of the cause of the flooding, SERVPRO of Westfield has the team to help you recover from any disastrous event.

Flooding is the most common natural disaster, and it claims more lives in the United States per year than hurricanes, tornadoes or lightning. It can affect everything from individual homes whose property collects excess water to wide swaths of communities and cities.

Flooding affects all 50 states and every U.S territory, but there are similarities in types and causality among all them. There are three common types of flooding, and they happen for four typical reasons.

3 Types of Natural Flooding

Flash floods are common, and they happen when heavy rain passes or sits over an area and overwhelms the ability of the ground to contain the moisture. Excess water runs off and takes garbage cans, cars and more with it.

River floods are exactly what they sound like. When there’s too much water for a river’s banks to hold, the water spills over the sides and causes destruction.

Coastal floods happen in areas next to large bodies of water, when storm surges or cyclonic activity causes ocean or gulf levels to rise to flood levels.

The 4 Most Common Causes of Natural Flooding

Heavy rainfall. Storms with excessive rainfall, or storms that sit and rest over an area for an extended period can cause flash floods or river flooding. Urban areas are more at risk for rain floods, because the higher percentage of concrete and asphalt means there’s a lack of soil to soak up all that water. In Harris County, a stormwater detention basin in underway to mitigate the risk of sever flooding. Phase 1 was completed in April 2021, and it was designed to hold approximately 217 million gallons of water.

Oceanic activity. Storm surges, hurricanes and rising tides can cause water levels to rise in waves, which can invade coastal communities and wreak havoc.

Dams and levees failing. The most notable example of this in recent history would be the disastrous levee breaks during 2005’s Hurricane Katrina. Levees and dams fail when cracks occur or excess pressure overtakes the dam’s ability to contain the surge of water behind it.

Snowmelts and ice dams. In areas of the country where heavy snow and prolonged freezing temperatures are common, snow and ice can build up over a winter’s time, and when they start to melt, they cause rivers of water to flow through area communities. Ice dams or ice jams happen when rivers become blocked by built-up ice being carried downstream, causing the banks to overflow.

Regardless of the cause of the flooding, SERVPRO has the tools and teams to help your home or business recover from its disastrous effects. Contact us anytime when flooding or water damage makes a mess in your life.

Spring Storms and Weather Hazards | SERVPRO® of Westfield

3/4/2022 (Permalink)

"an image with a cloudy, rainy, sunny and snowy sky" Extreme temperature changes can lead to the possibility of severe weather. SERVPRO of Westfield is a click away if you experience any damage.

The United State is one of the world’s biggest countries. As a byproduct, seasonal weather varies significantly throughout the nation—different sections of the country encounter a range of weather patterns, resulting in a range of seasonal weather threats.

As spring arrives and warm and cold air masses meet throughout the nation, let’s examine the several weather patterns that might develop across the country, as well as what we can expect in Texas.

In the spring, the Pacific Northwest is prone to heavy rain, which may result in floods and water damage. At higher altitudes, snow will continue to build, and its melting and runoff will generate its own issues.

Wintertime is most severe in the Upper Midwest and Northeast, where low temperatures will remain throughout the season. Residents from Maine to the Dakotas should anticipate very cold conditions, as well as the threat of snow and freezing, even into the spring season.

The Southwest, in particular, will need to be vigilant for extreme heat waves that may endanger lives and property. The South Pacific region, which includes Hawaii, will be on high alert for tsunamis caused by tectonic activity.

Windstorms, derechos and the potential of wildfires, which spread quickly in high winds and dry seasons, will be a worry for the central United States, from Iowa to Texas. Tornado Alley is a portion of this area where strong storms and tornadoes are common.

Texas is consistently named among the top 10 states most impacted by severe weather events. In 2020, the state was impacted by 11 billion-dollar catastrophes. Drought, high heat and wildfires were the three most significant occurrences.

Finally, the Southeast, may see a variety of extreme weather events, ranging from tornadoes and severe thunderstorms in landlocked states to hazardous rip currents and early-season hurricanes later in the spring.

Extreme weather is a legitimate threat regardless of where you live in the United States. Your threat might differ to that of an acquaintance in another state, but it’s never a bad idea to be prepared.

If extreme weather leaves you with damage from water, fire or other elements, help is a click away. Contact SERVPRO for fast, expert recovery.

SERVPRO employee standing in office next to a person reviewing plans If the day comes where your business is hit with disaster or emergency, you can rest assured SERVPRO of Westfield will be there to help.

Running a company is like balancing on a tightrope. You must strike a balance between staffing, payroll and keeping up with an ever-changing environment, all while competing in the marketplace and attempting to promote properly on social media. It is a full-time gig.

Scratch that—running a company is often an overtime gig. To get to this point, you’ve put in a lot of time and work. But if disaster strikes, are you prepared?

It only takes one disastrous event to completely derail a business. According to FEMA, 40 percent of small businesses are unable to reopen after a natural disaster, and a large percentage of those that do reopen shut down within a year.

With the economic horizon looming in the shadows of pandemic shutdowns as well as uncertainty about the future, it’s more crucial than ever for small companies to have a solid disaster plan in place. But three-quarters of all small firms do not have a strategy in place, which has to change.

SERVPRO of Westfield is delighted to assist companies in the area in building an Emergency Ready Plan. We can help you in determining what steps to take in the aftermath of a disaster event depending on your location and industry.

You’ll know the procedure from beginning to end, from the disaster damage restoration process to data recovery. If your company ever experiences a crisis, your plan will be ready to get to work right away to minimize delay and effect. You and your team will know who to call, what to do, when to do it, alternate inventory solutions, work locations and pretty much everything else.

To avoid making your business journey even more difficult than it currently is, plan ahead. Allow the SERVPRO specialists in our area to help you get prepared to bounce back with an Emergency Ready Plan. It might be the deciding factor in whether or not your company survives a disruption.

When your business is ready to prioritize planning and safety to prevent extended downtime, contact SERVPRO to get the Emergency Ready Plan underway from the folks who know all there is to know about disaster and recovery.

SERVPRO of Westfield uses Matterport Technology!

2/17/2022 (Permalink)

3D model of home Matterport camera captures a 3D image of the structure.

Traditionally, restoration companies scoped projects by sending a technician to photograph and measure a home or business, a process often requiring three or more site visits. For SERVPRO of Westfield, 3D capture transformed their workflow, eliminating the need for multiple visits to document hundreds of 2D photographs and manual measurements. Our investment is producing excellent upside, enabling the company to provide greater transparency of site conditions to adjusters and owners. When we receive a call from a customer, saying their home or business is damaged, the company captures the space with the Matterport Pro2 camera, uploads the scan to the cloud, and uses the 3D model to assess the damage, scope the work, and capture measurements. We are now able to produce an estimate more efficiently! By sharing the 3D models with stakeholders, we’ve reduced the number of inquiries and disputes from insurance adjusters, building consultants, and owners. 24-Hour Emergency Service Faster to Any Size Disaster Highly Trained Restoration Technicians A Trusted Leader in the Restoration Industry Locally Owned and Operated Advanced Restoration and Cleaning Equipment Have Questions? Is Floodwater a Biohazard?

2/17/2022 (Permalink)

Flood damage in Spring can Bring Contaminated Waters into a Home, but SERVPRO can Mitigate the Problem Safely

Cities close to sea level can experience flooding any time of the year. With the sea rise level increasing annually, storms and flooding occur more often and are more intense. Floodwaters create a biohazardous situation that requires professional intervention.

What Creates A Biohazard Incidence?

When a home experiences flood damage in Spring, it brings contaminated water into the building. These waters are teeming with microbes, and it is vital to understand the dangers. Microbes are living organisms that can pollute our air and water. SERVPRO deals with three main types:

  • Fungi – Multicell organism that digests materials to get the nutrients they need. Mold is a type of fungi.
  • Bacteria– Like fungi, bacteria absorb surrounding material to get nutrients but are single-cell organisms.
  • Viruses– Simple microbes that grow, multiply, and cause disease in living things.

While microbes are vital to the ecosystem, they can become a threat under certain conditions. Floodwaters are the perfect environment for a biohazard threat involving microbes. Homeowners should never attempt to clean up contaminated water on their own.

SERVPRO of Westfield has trained, certified biohazard technicians who have the experience and the proper equipment to mitigate flood damage in Los Angeles. Call us today at (281) 907-0018 for more information.

Storm Damage To Your Home in Ways You May Not Consider

2/17/2022 (Permalink)

One of the reasons why prompt storm damage remediation is so critical is because a storm may damage your home in ways that aren't always obvious. A SERVPRO professional can help you identify and solve any storm damage to the structural portions and other inner workings of your home.

Discover some of the ways a storm could damage your home's structural integrity. Let's get into it!

Roof Damage

  • Your roof can have obvious structural damage if a tree falls on it. However, that's not the only way that a storm could damage the structure of your roof. For example, large tree branches that fall on the roof can also cause damage even though they don't cause an evident cave-in.

Foundation Damage

  • One type of storm damage that can affect your foundation is flooding. Another is erosion. Localized flooding can increase the pressure of water against your foundation wall, which could result in cracks, shifting, sinking, and bowed foundation walls.

Interior Water Damage

  • Whether it enters through a broken window or a roof leak or rises up from the ground, water can be one of the biggest forces of storm damage. Although water may not destroy literally everything it touches, it can come close. Water can cause structural failure in commonly used building materials in your walls, ceilings, and floors.

Pest Damage

  • Although storms don't actually create pests, they can send wildlife looking for places to shelter and can sometimes create damage that allows pests into your home. While most pests are just a nuisance (and sometimes a potential health and safety hazard), some can actually affect your home's structure as well. Prompt storm damage repair can reduce the chances of picking up any of these pests due to storm damage.

As you can see, your home's structure is susceptible to many other types of damage than just large falling objects. For more information on storm damage, how you can prevent storm damage, and what to do if you suspect your home has sustained damage from a recent storm, get in touch with SERVPRO of Westfield today.

The SERVPRO Method for Dealing with Water Damage | SERVPRO® of Westfield

1/21/2022 (Permalink)

House floating in sea of water. When water damage strikes, make the call to SERVPRO of Westfield for A-to-Z cleanup and restoration.

If you listen closely, you can almost hear the drip: American homeowners experience a water emergency an astonishing 14,000 times a day. Multiplied millions of gallons of water spill into homes from everything from leaky pipes to floods every year.

When water is rushing in at home or you discover a soaked basement, you call SERVPRO. Then what?

Then this:

Emergency Contact. Your SERVPRO expert by chat or by phone will help you through some pertinent questions to discover the nature of your situation and help us know in a broad sense what we’re dealing with. Then we’ll figure out the best time to meet in person, and we’ll want it to be soon, for your sake.

Inspection and Water Damage Assessment. If water is still leaking or spilling in, stopping it will be our first priority. Then we can settle into a plan for removal, make note of any materials or items that will require replacement, and let you know about potential hazards in the home.

Water Removal. There’s not a bucket big enough to get rid of all that water, but we’ve got pumps to take it to a better place. We’ll do whatever’s necessary to get rid of those offending gallons of water.

Damaged Material Removal. As stated, we’ll have identified items that may need replacing, and after we get the mass of water removed, we can do that safely, leaving a safer, quicker drying process in front of us.

Cleaning, Sanitizing and Deodorization. Water leaves stains, stenches and germs behind, even more so if the problem stems from a sewer backup or flood. Leave it to SERVPRO to get things cleaned up and safe for you.

Drying. Drying is a critical part of the process. Even when the bulk of the water is gone, a hyper-focus on drying means the prevention of mold.

Monitoring. We’re always watching! When things need adjusting, we’ll be there. When you’ve got questions, we’ll be there.

Repairs and Construction. The full SERVPRO experience isn’t finished until we restore, restore, restore. And what can’t be restored, we’ll rebuild. We’ll do everything possible to make your home look "Like it never even happened."

When water damage strikes, make the call to SERVPRO for A-to-Z cleanup and restoration. We’ll make your damaged property look "Like it never even happened."

SERVPRO Is Always on Duty, Because It Makes a Difference | SERVPRO® of Westfield

1/21/2022 (Permalink)

Room fire with charred contents. If a fire issue causes damage to your home, remember the trusted leader in the recovery industry, SERVPRO of Westfield.

Ah, finally, the weekend. You’ve been looking forward to it since, well, last weekend. Finally a night to yourself, a day to sleep in and enjoy the serenity of a rest well-earned.

There’s only one problem—you’re not aware of it yet, but you’ve got a pipe pouring water down the walls in the story above you. And ‘round about 1 a.m. tomorrow, you’re going to be awakened to the drip-drip-drip-whoosh of your ceiling giving way under the weight of a whole mess of watery nastiness.

Obviously, we hope this scenario is total fiction, but we needed it to demonstrate a point: Disasters don’t happen when it’s convenient, and they don’t keep 9-to-5 work hours. Fortunately for you, neither does our emergency response team.

But we don’t offer 24-hour emergency service merely to say we do—it matters that we can offer quick response. When disaster comes calling in the middle of the night, you should be calling us, and here’s why.

After a fire. The flames of a home fire are certainly your first and most urgent problem, but the issue doesn’t end there: Soot and smoke are disastrous byproducts of fire that settle in and become permanent parts of your home mere hours after the fire. Fast action can be the difference between cleaning and replacement of walls, floors and more.

After water damage. Mold growth gets underway quickly after a water event. You have, at most, 48 hours until your water damage issue breeds mold in your home. The quicker your home can be relieved of its unwanted water and dried of the excess moisture, the better.

And what’s more, you could be startled awake by any number of outside disasters during nights, weekends, even holidays—heavy storms, freak weather events or floods can bring sudden calamity to homeowners at any time. And when then do, there’s no time to wait, because waiting only causes more damage.

No matter what time your disaster happens or is discovered, we’re here to make sure it gets handled quickly and professionally. Trust SERVPRO for 24-hour emergency service.

When you need help after a home or business disaster, fast service is a priority, and there’s nobody faster or more prepared than SERVPRO. Call us anytime to take advantage of our 24-hour emergency service.

SERVPRO of Westfield Offers Quick Help

6/11/2021 (Permalink)

Water intrusion incidents happen without any warning leaving a trail of destruction in your home. Apart from removing the water, other steps, such as cleaning, stain removal, and even rebuilding some parts of the home, may be necessary. Calling SERVPRO of Westfield to handle the restoration can help you get quicker results because we have a deeper understanding of the process along with much experience.

Anticipation of Problems

Properties in Houston hit by water damage undergo different stages of deterioration depending on the amount of water spilled, and the time it takes to restore them. Some problems like rusting, rotting in wood, or even mold development, which are challenging to address, happen in the later stages of the loss. Anticipating such problems can ensure correct actions are taken early, thus preventing them from developing. Our SERVPRO of Westfield technicians expedite water removal, especially around hardwood floors. We can also remove some boards to prevent buckling when the floor swells after absorbing water.

Understanding Material Structure

The various materials that make up the house are unique in many ways, including having different internal structures. The structure affects absorbency and ability to hold water for long, which can have several implications, including fueling mold growth, long after the water spill incident happens. Our SERVPRO of Westfield technicians have extensive knowledge of various building materials. For example, we understand the arrangement and size of pores in woods such as Red Cedar. We also understand whether a specific house has a tight, loose, or moderate envelope and its impact on the drying process. The envelope means several things, including the roof, ceiling, foundation, and finished floors, among other aspects.

Variety of Sophisticated Equipment

The restoration process involves several steps performed together or separately. Most of the steps require equipment to complete. We have sufficient equipment making it easier to complete such steps. Some equipment can also shorten the process. For example, using injection-dry systems and drying mats, it is possible to remove water from floorboards without demolishing such areas, which can become quite costly. There again, we try to restore and not replace building materials and internal fixtures.

Better understanding of water loss helps improve the restoration process. Call SERVPRO of Westfield at (281) 907-0018 to help address any issue you face after the loss, “Like it never even happened.”

House Flooding

6/11/2021 (Permalink)

Flooded Kitchen Flooding on the kitchen floor due to a broken pipe.

Water flooding in your house, business, or place of work can happen at any time. Most of the reasons for flooding are due to pipes breaking, backed up septic tanks, and/or water heaters. When those times happen we dry up the areas and think everything is dry and fine. But what most people do not realize is that moisture can be behind walls, cabinets, and rugs.

Here are some facts:

  • Mildew (mold in early stage) and molds grow on wood products, ceiling tiles, cardboard, wallpaper, carpets, drywall, fabric, plants, foods, insulation, decaying leaves, and other organic materials. Mold growths, or colonies, can start to grow on a damp surface within 24 to 48 hours.
  • It is not visible right after it happens meaning if you do not get a rapid response on the matter it will grow.
  • Even if you dry the area it can be wet behind walls
  • Bleach does not stop the growth behind the walls.

What To Do After Flooding

  • Turn off Electric to the affected area
  • Call SERVPRO of Westfield
  • Remove excess water by mopping and blotting.
  • Wipe excess water from wood furniture after the removal of lamps and tabletop items.
  • Remove and prop wet upholstery and cushions.
  • Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting.
  • Turn air conditioning on for maximum drying in summer.
  • Remove colored rugs from wet carpeting.
  • Remove art objects to a safe, dry place.
  • Gather loose items from floors.

What NOT To Do After Flooding

  • Don't leave wet fabrics in place. Hang furs and leather goods.
  • Don't leave books, magazines, or other colored items on wet carpet or floors.
  • Don't use your household vacuum to remove water.
  • Don't use television or other household appliances.
  • Don't turn on ceiling fixtures if the ceiling is wet, and keep out of rooms where ceilings are sagging.

Are you concerned about flood damage to your home or business? Here's Everything You Should Know

6/11/2021 (Permalink)

What To Do When A Storm Is Headed Your Way?

Running a business in Houston, TX, requires one to wear many hats, one of which is disaster prevention. When a storm is brewing on the horizon, what can you do to avoid or reduce flood damage from happening? Here’s a couple of tips to get you started:

Get to Know Your Local Area

Some locations are more susceptible to flooding than others. This may seem self-explanatory and painfully obvious but you’d be surprised at how many business owners are unaware of how their location could impact their company in the event of a natural disaster. Find out if you are in a flood prone area and plan ahead.

Plan and Prepare with the Right Equipment

There are tons of modern equipment out there that are designed to minimize the impact of flood damage on your building. When in doubt, go with the tried and tested classic: the good ol’ sand bag. If you’re feeling more adventurous, there are plenty of alternatives out there that are reusable and are easier to transport. However, be sure to do your research before you commit to a purchase. Install storm shutters that are easy and quick to secure and check your electrical equipment to ensure they will be out of reach of flood waters.

Check Your Surroundings

Perhaps the most important part of avoiding storm damage is to look outside your immediate perimeter for things that may encourage floods. This means looking at street drains and storm grates and making sure that they are free of leaves and other debris that inhibit the flow of water. This is easily overlooked in the rush of preparing for an incoming storm and can have a disastrous impact on your safety.

If the weather gets the best of you, there are flood remediation experts in your state that can get your business up and running in no time. Flood damage is no joke, but if you are well prepared you can easily reduce the impact that a storm can have on your business.

3 Helpful Tips for Roof Repair

6/11/2021 (Permalink)

Three Things You Want To Know About Fire Cleanup

If your business in Houston, TX, has suffered roof damage as a result of a fire, you may find yourself looking for tips on how to go about a fire cleanup. Here are three things you may want to know.

1. Protect the Damaged Area

It is important to protect any damaged areas to your company property until repairs can be made. You may want to consider boarding over the damage or taking advantage of tarp services offered by your local fire restoration company. Doing so can help prevent inclement weather from making any damage worse, as well as prevent wild animals from getting into the property.

2. Contact a Professional

It's often recommended that a fire cleanup be conducted by a professional restoration service. This is largely due to the fact that a fire can cause a number of types of damage, and that these professionals have the tools and knowledge to look for and repair any related damages along with the original problem. A restoration service may also be able to communicate with your insurance company in order to provide them with information they may need to process your claim.

3. Understand Possible Related Damage

In many cases the initial damage caused by fire can lead to additional problems, and it's important to understand this when dealing with a fire restoration. After a fire you may be looking at water damage and flooding, as well as roof repair, smoke damage, and potential mold problems. Understanding that these issues can be related to a fire can help you take the appropriate safety and clean up steps.

When conducting a fire cleanup at your place of business it's important to remember these three things. Protect any damage areas against further damage until repairs can be made. Contact a local fire restoration company in order to have repairs completed as quickly as possible. Understand any damages related to fire such as water damage or flooding so that proper clean-up procedures can be taken.

It’s Hurricane Season – Take Steps to Prevent Water Damage

6/11/2021 (Permalink)

Hurricane rainfall presents an opportunity for water damage to your property. Leaks and floods can cause damage to your property and require that you temporarily move out of your building while it’s restored. This presents a challenge as you want to get back to business as usual as soon as possible! Furthermore, severe leaks can lead to floods which can increase your risk of exposure to mold, chemical hazards, injuries, and more.

Fortunately, these inconveniences are preventable! Whether your water emergency occurs in an office building or big box store, it is imperative that you take measures to prevent leaks and damage to your property. Keep a look out for the following:

Damaged Windows

Water can seep through windows that aren’t properly sealed. This can cause mold build-up and damage to walls. Because caulk, the material that’s often used to seal windows, breaks down over time, be sure to have your windows resealed regularly.

Broken Pipes

Changes in pressure throughout the year and cold weather can cause pipes to break and burst. Although there are some tell-tell signs of this issue, such as water stains on walls or floors or an unpleasant and musty smell, detecting leaky pipes is challenging. With that said, it’s best to consult a professional to help determine whether your property has broken pipes.

HVAC Problems

Hurricane season often coincides with colder temperatures so we crank up the heat! However, ducts in the HVAC system can get worn out and damaged over time, especially during seasons like this, and cause leaks. For that reason, the system needs to be cleaned regularly and any water in it needs to be removed. Like broken pipes, it’s sometimes difficult to determine whether your HVAC system is causing a leak, so it’s best to consult a professional.

One of the best ways to get ahead is to create an Emergency Ready Profile. This is an immediate plan of action for how to restore your building after a disaster and get back to business. Additionally, we have 360 degree technology to document preloss conditions, including your equipment and where it was before disaster struck.

Cleaning Up After A Fire

6/10/2021 (Permalink)

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) estimates that 370,000 residential fires occur in the United States each year. The property damage caused by these fires totaled $7 billion. But what types of flames are generating this damage, and how are they being put out?

Types of Fires

High-oxygen fires, low-oxygen fires, and kitchen fires are the three primary types of fires that commonly occur in American homes. Each of these flames has unique characteristics that enable it to cause different forms of damages. There are also several methods for thoroughly cleaning them.

The amount of oxygen in a fire has a significant influence on the amount of damage it produces. The fire triangle consists of heat, fuel, and oxygen.

High-oxygen Fire

Dry soot is produced by high-oxygen flames, making them simpler to clean than the other common types of home fires. They're usually cleaned with dry sponges and a low-alkaline detergent.

Low-oxygen Fire

Because it creates oily, wet soot, a low-oxygen fire is a little more difficult to clean than a high-oxygen fire. The fire smolders as a result of the damp, smoky residue. These fires are often cleansed using warm water and a high-alkaline detergent that may be used to wash walls and buildings.

Kitchen Fire

Kitchen fires are usually the most difficult type of fire damage to clean. The fact that soot residue is difficult to detect is the most problematic aspect of these fires. Cabinets, drawers, and other equipment must be removed after a kitchen fire.

Cleaning Fires

The majority of the damage caused by fires is caused by the smoke and soot that the fire creates, rather than the actual flames. The smoke and soot in the house have the power to infiltrate the paint, carpet, upholstery, and clothing. Some materials in the impacted residence may need to be removed and disposed of, while others may be cleaned. Regardless of where the fire happens, there are several crucial elements to consider throughout the cleanup procedure.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

When it comes to putting out a fire, the most crucial consideration is safety. Gloves, a protective mask, long-sleeved shirts, and pants should be worn by anybody cleaning up a fire. This equipment will assist to reduce the risk of coming into touch with the mold. Specialists are trained to deal with mold so that it does not affect them or anybody else in the house, which is one of the main reasons why mold should only be dealt with by professionals.

Remove Contents from the Home

All contents within the house should be removed, regardless of the material that has been damaged. However, depending on the type of material being handled, it may not be necessary to discard it. While some things must be discarded as a result of a fire, others can be cleaned.

Ventilation

Not just in putting out a fire, but also in recovering a property after a fire, ventilation is crucial. Smoke and grime make the building uninhabitable, and it desperately needs to be ventilated. When firemen get on the site, they will immediately begin the ventilation procedure to make the structure safer. Ventilation will assist in the removal of scents after they have left.

Additional Contaminants

While smoke and soot cause the bulk of the damage, lead and asbestos may also degrade the environment and necessitate rehabilitation. What started as a simple fire restoration might turn into a major environmental restoration if they are disrupted.

Duct Cleaning

The smoke and soot produced by a fire might become trapped in the building's duct system. As a result, following every fire repair, a complete duct cleaning is essential. It's possible that toxins and odors will spread to other parts of the house if duct cleaning isn't done.

A house fire may be a catastrophic occurrence. Depending on the type of fire, the damage may require a little clean-up or a complete clean-up. In any case, there are several components of the restoration that must be done. If your house has been damaged by a fire, contact SERVPRO to assure a thorough restoration.

Increasing Your Home's Storm-Readiness

storm If you experience any property damage from storms, contact SERVPRO of Westfield.

If you’re thrilled to turn the page in February and start March with dreams of a warm spring afternoon filling your head, no one can blame you. It’s a great time to start planning new projects. For you, that might mean you want to create a vegetable garden or redo your landscaping.

Or maybe you like to spend the spring hiking or enjoying the outdoors before summer’s heat sends you back inside.

Spring is an enjoyable season, but like any season, it also brings some hazards for homeowners to manage. When it comes to this season, healthy and severe thunderstorms are always a concern.

While we don’t have the ability to make a storm take a different path around our home, we take steps to make our homes as safe and secure as possible, so they’re in good shape if a severe storm hits.

Projects to Do This Spring

Add these items to your project list this spring.

Cut and remove tree branches and limbs that need it. Limbs and branches that hang over your garage or home can be a hazard during storms. You can keep them from falling on your roof by cutting them down.

Declutter your gutters. We talk about the importance of this project every season. Keep your drains clean so that the water around your home is moving in the right direction instead of backing up and causing water damage.

Repair your roof. If you can check your roof to be sure it doesn’t have any missing shingles. Look for signs of a leak, too.

Make sure your home’s sump pump works. Not every family has one of these (or needs it), but it’s important to be sure it’s working correctly before your house goes through a rainy spring.

Don’t let items around your home become hazards. Be sure your patio furniture or other similar things don’t become tools for the wind to damage your home.

If a fire, flood, or any other cause damage to your home, you can always count on us for restoration assistance. We are available 247 in the event of an emergency. Contact us at any time to learn more about our restoration services and how we can help you

Industrial Hygienists Are Mold Infestation Experts

6/10/2021 (Permalink)

Industrial hygienists also go by the name environmental hygienists. A hygienist can evaluate your mold problem, create a report and explain the findings. The report includes the types of mold present, the infested locations, and the severity of the infestation.

When it comes to insurance, the hygienist’s report plays a crucial role. The insurance adjuster uses the report to determine a course of action for mold cleaning. Insurance companies depend on the expert opinions of Certified Industrial Hygienists. Without an expert evaluation, a successful cleanup is difficult.

Mold Cannot Hide From Industrial Hygienists

One might think that a hygienist is someone who walks through your home with a clipboard and takes notes. That is certainly part of the job. Don’t be surprised when the gloves, mask, and tools come out. The hygienist’s job is also to find mold wherever it hides. The job includes removing wallboard and searching crawlspaces to discover mold’s hiding places.

If your home in the Houston, TX area suffers from a mold infestation, it’s time to pick up the phone. There are local certified hygienists and mold remediation specialists who are ready to evaluate your mold problem and begin the mold cleaning process right away. They are here to help.

Bathrooms are a breeding ground for mildew and mold. With moisture and heat constantly surging through your Houston, TX, bathroom, it can seem like an insurmountable task to keep it fresh and dry. Luckily, bathroom mildew is preventable.

Prepare for Severe Weather in Advance

6/10/2021 (Permalink)

It is difficult to know if a storm that is forecasted to move through an area will be severe enough to cause damage before it arrives. Storms—as well as the damage they cause—can vary wildly, which is why we always recommend taking an approach grounded in advanced preparation to remain as safe as possible.

By taking steps to protect your home, you can be certain that no matter what type of storm moves through your area, you are as protected as possible.

Be as Protected as Possible From Storms

Prepare your home as much as possible. Though the nature of storm damage might seem erratic, by doing some preparation work in advance to protect your property, you can ensure you are taking the right steps to mitigate any possible damages. Trimming back any dead or overhanging trees is a great start, as is securing any objects that could possibly become loose during a storm. Many homeowners also have whole-home generators installed, allowing for utility usage if your power is out.

Create a family communications plan. When your family is all at home when severe weather is forecasted to come through the area, you can move as a group to your designated sheltering area and be certain you are all safe. However, if a storm catches one or more of your family members while they are out and about, it is important to have a communications plan so you can check-in and be certain that everyone is safe.

Make sure your emergency kit is stocked. The best thing you can do to be prepared for any emergency is to have an emergency kit in your home, and storms are no exception. Your emergency kit can house everything your family might need, both during the storm and after the fact. Items like flashlights, batteries, first aid supplies, food, and water are all good to keep on hand just in case.

Consider getting a weather radio. Having cell phones has made it much easier to receive emergency weather alerts no matter where you are, but in case of severe weather, it is always good to have a backup such as a weather radio. Storms can cause power outages and even knock out cell towers, so having a weather radio that is either powered by replaceable batteries or a manual system is smart.

If your home is damaged by a storm, you can depend on us to take care of any damages. Contact us at any hour to report damage and receive a rapid response.

Tips To Keep Your Bathroom Mold-Free

6/10/2021 (Permalink)

Here are four tips to keep your humidity problem at bay.

  1. Always run your bathroom fan while showering or bathing. Introducing more airflow into your bathroom with the use of your built-in bathroom fan is the easiest way to prevent mildew. Keep your fan running for the duration of your shower and for at least half an hour after for maximum results. With increased ventilation, the majority of moisture in your bathroom should dissipate quickly.
  1. After you’re finished with your shower, remove moisture from your shower surround. It’s easy to get rid of a good portion of post-shower wetness with an inexpensive squeegee tool. One pass with your squeegee across your shower walls and your humidity problem will literally be heading down the drain.
  1. Keep your bathroom caulking fresh. After years of being exposed to moisture, the caulk lines around your bathroom tile, tub surrounds and shower doors may not be as secure as they once were. It is important to always check your caulking for bathroom mildew and mold while you clean. To prevent them, try to use heavy-duty cleaning products on and around your caulk lines regularly, such as a bleach-based or ammonia-based cleanser.
  1. Contact mold remediation at the first sign of mold. When you do find spots of mold that have spread to a larger area in your Houston, TX, home, don’t risk furthering the damage with DIY removal techniques. Call your local mold remediation and removal company to take care of it right the first time.

Definitely call in professionals if you find mold in your home. However, by following these simple steps to prevent bathroom mildew, your humidity problem can be a thing of the past.

Water Damage: The Most Common Causes

6/9/2021 (Permalink)

Water damage has a wide range of effects on structures. Worst of all, water damage that isn't addressed right away, such as through water damage restoration, can eventually compromise a building's foundation. The worst thing about water damage is that it can happen at any time. No matter how great or small, SERVPRO of Westfield is waiting for your call!  Below is a list of common causes of water related loss:

Broken Pipe: Stoppages and damage are common in plumbing systems, especially in older homes. Look for cracks, bulges, stains, and other symptoms of moisture on your ceiling or flooring to prevent plumbing problems before they start. If you see a leak, it could indicate that there is also damage in other areas.

Increases in your water bill could also indicate that your landscaping, flooring, and foundation have been damaged. Look for pipes in places where water tends to collect, such as crawl spaces, cupboards, and attics. If you notice any evidence of water damage, contact someone as soon as possible to avoid further issues.

Washer Overflows: Leaky hoses are the most common cause of washing machine flooding. Over time, the leak may worsen, causing damage to your home.

Water Heater Overflow: If you have an old water heater, there is a good chance it will leak at some point. The same can be said for water heaters that have been neglected or improperly installed. An overabundance of tank pressure might also cause a leak. When a water heater leaks, the area will immediately get flooded. Water damage prevention is difficult, but not impossible. If you address the following potential reasons, you might be able to avoid or at least minimize water damage.

Broken appliance hoses: As appliances age, their pipes may corrode and their hoses may become brittle. Leaks from your dishwasher might create an unsightly puddle on your kitchen floor. Worn gaskets, broken doors, and clogged drains are all common sources. It has the potential to harm your tiling, electrical wiring, and paint.

Rising Water from Flooding: Hurricanes, thunderstorms, and floods can all bring a lot of water into your house, flooding it. Water that cannot be absorbed by the earth may overflow into your home. A flood alarm and warning system can help you prepare for a natural disaster and safeguard your home. If you live near a body of water, make sure you have flood insurance.

Air Conditioner Drip Pan Overflow: Condensation forms on the evaporator coil of your air conditioner, which drips into a drain pan and out the back of your house via a condensate drain line. Until the drain pan is destroyed or the condensate drain line is filled with dust or debris, this drainage system operates. Because the water can't get out, it will seep into your home through your air conditioner. All of the water spilling from your air conditioner may harm your floors and walls, as well as making your insulation wet.

Other causes:

  • Roof Leaks
  • Leaks from a Broken Window
  • Toilet or Bathtub Overflow
  • Fire Related Water Damage

Until you experience a water related loss you may not realize how important it is to hire a water damage specialist. By following these Dos and DON’Ts, it will help to reduce the amount of damage and increase the chances of a successful restoration.

Water Damage from Clean Water (Rain Water)

DO:

  • Find the source of the water if possible and stop or block the water from entering the home.
  • Turn off the circuit breakers in the wet areas of the house. Be sure the access to the power distribution panel is safe from electrical shock before doing so.
  • Remove as much excess water as possible by mopping and blotting.
  • Wipe excess water from wood furniture after removing lamps and tabletop items.
  • Remove and prop up wet upholstery cushions for even drying.
  • Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpeting.
  • Remove to a safe, dry place any paintings, art objects, computers, documents, and other materials that are valuable or sensitive to moisture.
  • Use wooden clothespins to keep furniture skirts off damp floors.
  • Hang draperies with coated hangers to avoid contact with wet carpeting or floors.
  • Hang furs and leather goods to dry separately at room temperature.

DON’T:

  • Enter rooms with standing water where electrical shock hazards may exist.
  • Enter affected areas if electrical outlets, switches, circuit breakers, or electrical equipment are exposed to water. Always avoid electrical shock hazards.
  • Leave books, newspapers, magazines, or other colored items on wet carpets or floors to cause staining.
  • Leave Oriental rugs or other colored rugs on wet wall-to-wall carpets to cause staining.
  • Use your household vacuum cleaner to remove water, possibly causing electrical shock or damage to the vacuum cleaner.
  • Use TVs or other appliances while standing on wet carpets or floors, especially not on wet concrete floors.
  • Turn off ceiling fixtures if the ceiling is wet or enter rooms where ceilings are sagging from retained water.

CLEANING UP AFTER A FIRE

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), there are an estimated 370,000 house fires each year in the United States. These fires cost a total of $7 billion in total property damage. But what kind of fires are causing this damage and how are these fires cleaned up?

Types of Fires

There are three main types of fires that typically occur in homes across America; high-oxygen fires, low-oxygen fires, and kitchen fires. Each of these fires has its own aspects that allow them to create different types of damage. There are also different ways to properly clean them up.

A major factor that impacts the damage a fire cause is an oxygen. Oxygen is part of the fire triangle of heat, fuel, and oxygen.

High-oxygen Fire

High-oxygen fires produce dry soot which makes these easier to clean than the other main types of house fires. They can typically be cleaned using a low-alkali detergent with dry sponges.

Low-oxygen Fire

A low-oxygen fire is a little more difficult to clean than a high-oxygen fire as it produces greasy, wet soot. This wet, smoky residue causes the fire to smolder. These fires are usually cleaned using a high-alkaline detergent with warm water which can be used to wash walls and structures.

Kitchen Fire

Usually, the most challenging type of fire damage to clean is kitchen fires. The biggest challenge of these fires comes from the fact that the soot residue is difficult to detect. After kitchen fires, cabinets, drawers, and other appliances must be removed.

Cleaning Fires

Most of the damage that comes from fires doesn’t come from the actual flames but from the smoke and soot that the fire produces. This smoke and soot have the ability to penetrate the paint, carpet, upholstery, and clothes throughout the house. While some material in the affected home will need to be removed and disposed of, other materials are able to be cleaned. When the cleaning process takes place, there are some key aspects regardless of where the fire occurs.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Safety is the most important aspect when cleaning up a fire. Anyone cleaning up a fire should wear gloves, a protective mask, long-sleeved shirts, and pants. This equipment will help to minimize contact with the mold that could be dangerous. Again, professionals are trained to deal with mold so that it doesn’t harm them or anyone else in the house which is a major reason why only professionals should deal with mold.

Remove Contents from the Home

Regardless of what the material is that has been damaged, all contents inside the home should be removed. However, depending on what the specific material is that is being dealt with, it may not need to be discarded. While some materials do need to be discarded following a fire, others are able to be cleaned.

Ventilation

Ventilation is a key part of, not just putting out a fire, but also restoring a home after a fire. Smoke and soot create an uninhabitable environment in the building which is in need of fresh air. When the firefighters arrive on the scene, they will begin the ventilation process immediately to make the building safer. After they leave, ventilating will help by removing odors.

Additional Contaminants

While smoke and soot are responsible for the majority of the damage, lead and asbestos also can create an environment that is in need of restoration. If they become disturbed, what began as a simple fire restoration could become a serious environmental restoration.

Duct Cleaning

The smoke and soot that are a result of a fire can get trapped in the duct system of the building. Because of this, a thorough duct cleaning is required after any fire restoration. If a duct cleaning is not completed, there’s the possibility that contaminants and odors can spread to other areas of the home.

A fire in the home can be a devastating event. Depending on what type of fire occurs, the damage can force a small clean-up or a total clean-up. Either way, there are certain aspects of the restoration that will need to be completed. If you suffer a fire in your home, call on the professionals at SERVPRO to ensure a complete restoration.

How To Safely Use Candles In Your Home

6/9/2021 (Permalink)

Candles Candles can add a beautiful smell to a home, but you need to be careful.

While candles may be commonplace in homes across the country, they frequently cause house fires with an average of 23 home candle fires reported every day. Fortunately, there are many ways you can prevent a candle fire from ever occurring in your home.

Top Causes of Candles Fires

There are many reasons a candle fire can occur. One-third of fires begin in bedrooms and the top three days they occur are Christmas, New Year’s Day, and New Year’s Eve. Those most common situations that lead to candle fires include:

  • Candles being left too close to flammable materials
  • Forgetting to extinguish candles before leaving the home
  • Leaving a candle burning while sleeping

What To Do if a Fire Starts

If a candle fire ever happens in your home in [City, State], you need to know how to properly extinguish it. When putting out a candle fire, you should never use water, which causes it to spread. If the wax inside the candle catches fire, grab a cover to remove oxygen from the candle. If the flames spread to other parts of your home and get out of control, quickly contact the fire department and evacuate your home. If any fire damage occurs or your home is in need of smoke cleanup services, a fire damage cleanup company can help restore your home back to its original condition.

Candle Alternatives

The best way to prevent candles from causing a fire in your home is to keep them out of your house entirely. There are many candle alternatives to consider including:

  • Incense
  • Flameless candle
  • Essential oil diffuser
  • Wax warmer
  • Oil warmer
  • Stick diffuser

While candles are often used for giving off a warm, romantic light and an appealing aroma, they can cause a candle fire if used incorrectly. It is important to always use candles responsibly or to try out any of the candle alternatives listed in this guide. Visit http://www.SERVPROWestfield.com/ for more information on fire loss.

Cleaning up the smoke and soot in Houston

6/9/2021 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot are extremely intrusive, and they can enter your home through many locations, producing hidden damage and odors. Our skill and experience with smoke damage allow us to investigate and precisely analyze the amount of the damage in order to build a complete plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

Wet and dry smoke are the two forms of smoke. As a result, several forms of soot residue are left behind after a fire. SERVPRO of Westfield will analyze the soot to establish the type of smoke damage that has occurred before beginning the restoration process. The cleaning techniques will subsequently be determined by the data gathered during the pre-testing. Here's a little more information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

What Causes Mold and How Can You Prevent It?

6/9/2021 (Permalink)

Being exposed to mold indoors can cause health effects, so it’s important that you know what causes mold and how to prevent mold from building up in your home, school, or office building.

What Causes Mold?

Mold can be found almost anywhere and it can grow on virtually any organic substance so long as moisture and oxygen are present. It can grow on wood, paper, carpet, food, and insulation. The cause of indoor mold is excessive moisture accumulating in buildings or on building materials especially if the moisture problem remains undiscovered or unaddressed for an extended period of time.

It’s impossible to eliminate all mold and mold spores in an indoor environment but indoor mold can be controlled by limiting the amount of moisture in the building. Moisture requires water to grow so preventing moisture problems from occurring inside buildings is of the utmost importance.

There are many causes of moisture problems including uncontrolled humidity. Some moisture problems have led to changes in building construction practices in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. In some situations, they’ve resulted in buildings being tightly sealed but this can cause problems too. A building too tightly sealed may lack adequate ventilation, which could potentially lead to additional moisture buildup.

Moisture problems could include roof leaks, landscaping, or gutters directing the water into or under the building and unvented combustion appliances. Delayed maintenance or insufficient maintenance has been associated with moisture problems occurring in schools and large buildings. It’s easy to accumulate moisture in less insulated buildings like portable classrooms and other temporary structures so these types of buildings are more susceptible to having mold problems.

Prevention

Since mold can grow almost anywhere and on just about any organic substance, it’s very difficult to prevent mold from growing. However, there are preventative steps you can take that will decrease your chances of having mold in your building.

Because moisture is the cause of mold, fixing leaky plumbing or any other leaks as soon as possible in the building will go a long way toward preventing the appearance of mold. Also, watch for condensation spots or wet spots around the building. Make sure to fix the source of this moisture as soon as possible to reduce the chances of it turning into mold.

The best way to prevent mold from building up in your building is to prevent moisture from accumulating in the building. You can do this by increasing the surface temperature or reducing the moisture level, the humidity, in the air. To increase the surface temperature in the building, insulate or increase the air circulation throughout the building. You can reduce the moisture level in the air by repairing any leaks in the building, increasing the ventilation if the air is cold and dry outside, or dehumidifying if the air is warm and humid outside.

Make sure to keep heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) drip pans clean, flowing properly, and unobstructed as this is another potential cause of mold growth in the building.

Hidden Mold

In some cases, you could have hidden mold or indoor mold that may not be obvious. It’s possible that mold may be growing on hidden surfaces throughout the building such as the backside of drywall, wallpaper, paneling, the top of the ceiling tiles, or the underside of carpets and pads.

Possible locations where you could find hidden mold may be pipe chases and utility tunnels with leaking or condensing pipes, walls behind furniture where condensation can form, condensate drain pans inside air handling units, porous thermal or acoustic liners inside ductwork, or roof materials above the ceiling tiles which can be caused due to roof leaks or insufficient insulation.

There are some building materials like drywall with vinyl wallpaper or wood paneling that can act as vapor barriers that trap moisture underneath its surface providing a moist environment where mold can grow.

If your building smells moldy or you know there’s been water damage in the building, you may suspect mold is in the building even though you can’t see the source. If you start looking into the hidden mold, it’s important to remember that investigating hidden mold may be difficult and will require caution. Be sure to always use personal protective equipment when investigating a potential mold problem.

If you think you have mold in your home, school, or office building, call the trusted professionals at SERVPRO to remediate the problem.

All commercial properties serve as centers for specific activities, so much so that even a small disaster can limit your availability to customers. Steps to Manage Damage Caused by Fire and Smoke

5/22/2020 (Permalink)

Step 1: Safety

The top priority is safety. The first and most important step to take after a fire is making sure everyone is safe. If anyone should feel ill, it its imperative to receive medical attention. Following the assurance of personal health, the next thing to do is have the Fire Marshall assess whether or not it is safe to be in or near the building where the fire or smoke damage occurred. Electrical hazards are common occurrences after a fire and can be extremely dangerous along with water hazards caused from the fire or in the process of putting out the fire. Maintaining safety throughout the entire restoration process is vital.

Step 2: Restoration

Promptly following the Fire Marshall's declaration of the building being safe, then you, as well as your highly trained SERVPRO of Westfield professional, can begin restoration. We maintain the restore versus replace mentality in order to preserve the items that hold sentimental value, as well as saving you money.

The following is a list of to-do's and not-to-do's after a fire.

What To Do After A Fire

  • Movement in the home should be limited to prevent soot particles from being embedded into upholstery and carpets.
  • Keep hands clean to prevent further soil of upholstery, walls and woodwork.
  • Place clean towels or old linens on traffic areas.
  • If electricity is off, empty freezer and refrigerator and prop doors open.
  • Wash houseplants (if any) on both sides of the leaves.
  • Change HVAC filter
  • Tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers (i.e. vents)

What Not To Do After A Fire

Protect Your Houston Home from Summer Storms

5/22/2020 (Permalink)

The gentle summer rain can be refreshing when faced with the alternative of heat and uncertainty of drought. But a gentle rain can easily turn into a thunderstorm or hurricane, which can be severe enough to cost homeowners across Houston, TX thousands of dollars in damages. The hurricane and tropical storm season occurs mostly around June 1 to November 30 in Houston, TX. Now is the perfect time to do a checkup of your home to make sure it is as protected as possible.

Checking gutters and downspouts. Gutters that are falling can cause serious damage to the foundation of your home. Properly installed gutters should carry damage away from your home’s foundation to prevent any impairment to you property.

Sump pumps. If you have a basement you may have a sump pump installed to remove excess ground water. If your system fails in the middle of a storm event, you may end up dealing with a flooded basement, which is why it is pertinent to ensure everything is working properly.

Roof. Have a professional inspect the shingle for any damage that could lead to leaks during heavy rain.

Landscaping. Regular maintenance of your yard should include trimming trees and shrubs to help minimize damage during a storm. Well pruned shrubbery is more wind resistant and less likely to cause damage to your property. Dead branches and limbs are easily transported when the winds are high. Anything outdoors that is not tied down, such as furniture, decorations, patio umbrellas, etc. should be brought inside in the events of a storm.

Generator. Weather-related outages can wreak havoc on the modern home. When electricity is lost, sump pumps stop working, food in fridges and freezers stop working, and home alarm systems are vulnerable. Having a standby generator, can keep essentials running until power is restored.

After the storm, if your home has suffered from water damage, remember SERVPRO® of Westfield is always ‘here to help.’

Tips to Prepare for a Thunderstorm

5/22/2020 (Permalink)

Depending on your location you may experience a lot of rain and thunderstorms. It is important to be prepared and have a plan in place. You can do this by talking with those in your household and creating an emergency plan for thunderstorms, floods, and tornadoes. Below we have a few suggestions to make sure you are ready for whatever happens.

Protect electronics. Your electronics can get fried if they are not properly protected. Plug electronics into a surge protector to avoid damage during a storm

Prepare for power outages. Have battery-operated flashlights and lanterns in easy to get to places. Check on these items from time to time to make sure the batteries still work and replace them if necessary. Call your local power company to inform them of the outage and to get information regarding when the power should be restored.

Stay away from power lines. Do not go near power lines for if they should fall to the ground, they can be very hazardous. Call 911 if you see downed power lines.

Go inside when you hear thunder. If you hear thunder, it is likely that lightning is also occurring. Lightning can be dangerous, therefore, make sure to go inside when thunder occurs.

Seek shelter. There are many different natural elements that can be harmful when outside during a disaster. Therefore, during a storm it is important to seek shelter and be safe. If you’re inside it is best to be at the lowest level of your home.

Keep an emergency kit ready. Consider putting a kit of things you may want to have on hand during a storm. Items you would include may be water, non-perishable food, flashlights, blankets extra batteries, and a first aid kit.

If an emergency does strike your home during a thunderstorm, SERVPRO of Westfield is ready to help get your life back to normal. Call us, (281) 907-0018

What to know about dishwasher leaks

5/21/2020 (Permalink)

Dishwasher Leak Call SERVPRO of Westfield to help with your water damage (281) 907-0018.

For some people, dishwasher leaks start as a slow drip that may not be immediately noticed. Others discover dishwasher leaks as soap suds bubble their way across the kitchen floor.

Stopping leaks before they cause damage is ideal, but depending on the situation, is not always possible.

Time is critical when it comes to a water leak of any type. The faster you respond and take action to stop water from spilling onto your kitchen floor, the less damage that will be done – and that means less costly repairs!

What to do When Your Dishwasher Leaks

  1. If your dishwasher is leaking a significant amount of water, first turn off the dish washing cycle. For small leaks, it may be possible to capture the water with a towel or bowl and let the cycle finish first, but this is generally not recommended.
  2. Try to keep water from pooling on the floor. It’s easy for water to travel downwards and cause damage to your home’s structure out of sight. Use bowls, plates, and towels to capture and control the water flow.
  3. Clean up as much water as you can to minimize damage.
  4. Determine the cause of the leak. Every leak has its own particular cause, and your course of action may take a bit of detective work.
  5. Repair your dishwasher leak before it ruins your kitchen floor. Some flooring is more susceptible to water damage than others, such as wood or bamboo.

If you have an unexpected water damage call SERVPRO of Westfield (281) 907-0018. We are always here to help!

Roof Damage Tarping

5/20/2020 (Permalink)

When you think of a storm damaging your home, the first thing that may come to mind is your roof.  As the first line of defense to your home, your roof takes the brunt of the punishment from any storm that passes through your area.  If your roof becomes damaged due to a storm or any other reason, a professional should be contacted as soon as possible.  An assessment needs to be made and action needs to be taken.

One of the actions that may need to be addressed quickly is tarping your roof.  The professionals at SERVPRO of Westfield are able to provide you with roof tarping in the event of an emergency or as a precautionary measure.  Tarping the roof can prevent any secondary damage from occurring and can give you time to get the roof inspected and ready for repair.

In addition to roof tarping, board up services are also available.  Board ups are also helpful in securing your property and limiting any further damage.

Call SERVPRO of Westfield for your roof tarping and board up needs.

Memorial Day Weekend

5/20/2020 (Permalink)

If your plan is to grill up some good grub this Memorial Day weekend or any weekend for that matter, keep reading for some helpful tips to keep everyone safe!

  •  Maintain cleanliness! Grill fires are often caused by fat and oil buildup on the grill and the tray underneath the grill.  Use a wire brush to clean up excess fat and oil while the grill is still hot.  Try to clean your grill thoroughly at least 2 to 3 times a year.
  • Gas grills:  Be sure to check for any leaks on the propane tank.  A thorough examination does not take long and can help prevent a dangerous accident.
  • Do not leave the grill unattended.  This may seem like common sense, but it does lead to fires more often than you’d think! Also, grills stay hot up to an hour after use, so keep that in mind when you’re finished grilling for the day.
  • Wear proper clothing. If your clothing has long sleeves or hanging tassels/ strings, consider changing into a tee shirt. Clothing that has loose ends and hanging strings can catch fire easily.
  • Keep the grill outside.  It is best to keep the grill at least 10 feet from your house.  Almost one-third of grill fires happen on the porch or balcony of a residence. It is safer to be as far from the home as possible.

Remember these simple tips to stay safe while grilling.  We want you to have the most enjoyable time with your families for the upcoming holiday weekend and the entire summer.

How will you benefit?

Policyholders benefit from 24 hour turnaround time on emergency items, the recovery of sentimental items, a simpler and faster claim settlement and a satisfaction guarantee.  This results in delighted customers.

Insurance companies benefit from significantly reduced claim settlement costs.  SERVPRO of Westfield has saved insurance companies tens of thousands of dollars in settlement costs on hundreds of claims.

Preferred Vs Non-Preferred Vendor

5/18/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Westfield is a preferred vender for most insurance companies.  We have been on some programs for over 16 years.

I have heard people say you don't want to use a program vendor.  That preferred vendors only do the bare minimum and they only do what the insurance company says to do.  Those are not true statements.

As a trusted vendor for many carriers if I can justify something they will pay for it on any covered claim.  In 18 years I have never had an insurance company or home owner come back to me for something that was not justified.

Insurance companies want you to renew your policy.  They know you need to been taken care of.  They only want good qualified companies representing them as a preferred vendor.  Price is not the insurance companies number one motive.

Would you consider going out of network on your health insurance?  Probably not, simply because the carrier may not or will not pay for  your doctor visit.  I am not suggesting your carrier won't cover your claim because you don't use a program vendor, but you may run into challenges if a non program company does something your carrier doesn't approve of.  As a trusted vendor I can get approvals on questionable concerns very quickly.

Water Damage, Fire or smoke, a preferred vendor really can make the claim process go much smoother.

Conditions In Houston Might Be Right For Mold

5/14/2020 (Permalink)

It’s estimated that more than 1 million types of mold exist, yet less than 10 percent have actually been named. This means mold is very common in both indoor and outdoor environments. While mold and humans can sometimes co-exist without issue, there are certain species of mold that can cause health effects for some people.

If the right conditions exist, mold will grow.  Those conditions include:

  • Water - Different mold types require varying amounts of liquid before growth begins.
  • Temperature - Normal indoor temperatures will promote mold growth.
  • Time - Initial mold colonizers can take hold within one day after being exposed to an adequate water supply.

Mold growth can occur in any home, so it’s important to keep an eye out for situations that might promote mold activity. Roof/chimney leaks, wet basements, or condensation from ducts that dampen surrounding insulation are just a few examples of issues that make a house a prime target for mold growth.

If you suspect mold in your home, call SERVPRO of Westfield to assess the situation.  We have the knowledge, tools and track record to effectively remediate mold in your home or business.

If you suspect mold, call us today at 281-907-0018

What to Do:

  • Stay out of affected areas.
  • Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
  • Contact SERVPRO of Westfield for mold remediation services.

Houston Residents: Follow These Mold Safety Tips If You Suspect Mold

What to Do:

  • Stay out of affected areas.
  • Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
  • Contact SERVPRO of Westfield for mold remediation services.

What Not to Do:

  • Don’t touch or disturb the mold.
  • Don’t blow air across any surfaces with visible or suspected mold growth.
  • Don’t attempt to dry the area yourself.
  • Don’t spray bleach or other disinfectants on the mold.

Damp Areas Can Cause Mold

1/9/2019 (Permalink)

HAVE YOU HAD ANY LONG TERM MOISTURE ISSUES IN YOUR HOME?

Besides causing major interruptions to your property, exposure to mold can present serious health effects. Mold grows in damp, warm humid environments. If you have had previous water issues, there could be a high possibility you have mold growing in your Houston, TX home/establishment. Most common forms of mold may be found around bathrooms, basements, ceilings, windows, insulation, and around plumbing pipes. Signs that you have a moisture problem include water stains or discoloration on walls, floors, or ceilings. If your walls are bowed, bulging or warped it probably means moisture has gotten into them. Additional signs that you may be facing a moisture problem are surface abnormalities like peeling, bubbling, or cracking of the paint or wallpaper. Seeing these signs could be a clue that there is mold growing within or behind the material.

The above signs and problems in homes are usually created by leaks that breed mold. Mold can spread quickly through a property if left untreated. Mold growth from leaks can often be hidden, even if the leak is not behind the surface, due to seeping. If you have had previous water leaks, even if you haven't seen the signs of water damage, it's a good possibility that you may have mold and should get it checked. SERVPRO can quickly respond to contain the infestation to help prevent the spread of mold to other parts of the property.

If You See Signs of Moisture or Mold, Call SERVPRO of Westfield Today – (281) 907-0018.

Understanding Mold

1/8/2019 (Permalink)

Visible mold growth might seem like an obvious sign. However, suspecting mold in your Houston, TX home could be a little tricky, and often overlooked as soot or dirt. Unfortunately the only clues that may alert us of growing mold is the odor. If mold can not be physically see on the surface do not ignore the smell. Make an attempt to thoroughly inspect the home before the mold problem increases.

Even if the mold growth is small, you should take action immediately. Small mold patches can spread, especially in the right conditions. Visible mold growth can also be a sign of a larger hidden mold colony. If you don't take care of mold soon, it can lead to bigger problems within your property.

You may not realize there is mold in your house, especially, if it is unusual looking. Some molds may appear white and thread-like while others may look like small clusters of black spots. Mold can be black, gray-brown, gray-green, or white in color. Mold growing behind surfaces can even appear orange, pink or purple.

If you suspect that your Houston, TX area home or business has a mold problem, SERVPRO of Westfield is well equipped to take care of remediation of your property.

Sustaining a Water Damaged Roof

1/7/2019 (Permalink)

When it comes to water damage immediate action is crucial. Roofs of a Houston, TX home or business can experience major damage from heavy rains, strong winds, or falling debris. Applying a roof tarp in an attempt to reduce the possibility of additional damage seems like a good, inexpensive way to quickly cover the holes in the roof and stop a water leak, but this only allows for a temporary solution until safe inspection and repairs can be done.

Although a roof tarp has many benefits, it is not recommended as a permanent solution due to the following:

  • They all wear out over time.
  • Mold could grow in water affected areas of the damaged roof
  • Wind can move tarp, leaving leaking spaces uncovered
  • Tarp may increase heat, leading to higher electrical bill
  • Improperly installed may lead to pools of standing water, perfect for insects

SERVPRO of Westfield in Houston, TX is here to assist homeowners and commercial businesses with water mitigation and mold remediation. You have the right to protect your property as a home and business owner. Tips For Preventing and Thawing Freezing Pipes

1/4/2019 (Permalink)

When freezing weather approaches in Houston, TX things can get rather problematic and this does not only include frozen roads. You could also become subjected to freeze created leaks. Due to frozen water expanding within pipes, it could crack the copper tubing. This not only limits your water supply, but when the pipes do defrost there may be a severe leakage repair. Luckily there are aids to prevent pipes from freezing.

Tips to Help Prevent Freezing Pipes:

  • Fix source of any drafts (i.e. dryer vents, bathroom fan vents, windows, ect) and insulate pipes in all areas devoid of heat, such as crawl spaces, basements, attic, and garage.
  • Keep doors to all rooms open to allow heat flow to all areas.
  • Keep all water-supply piping away from outside walls, where it could be exposed to cold weather
  • Open all faucets, both and hot and cold water, to just a trickle, to keep water moving in the pipes and prevent icing.
  • Open cabinets under the sinks so warm air temperature can flow around the plumbing. (Be sure to keep cleaners and other hazardous chemicals away from children and pets.)

For water mitigation needs, SERVPRO of Westfield is here to service you.

Higher Standard of Carpet Cleaning For Your Houston, TX Business

1/3/2019 (Permalink)

Commercial carpets are a big investment, especially when you have heavy foot traffic. There are heavy duty carpets designed for such situations, but properly taking care of them is often necessary. Here at SERVPRO of Westfield we are well equipped to aid with the upkeep of your carpet cleaning regularly. Apart from vacuuming the carpet regularly, your commercial carpet should also be deep cleaned. This allows you to keep it looking professional and well-kept, along with extending its life.

When customers walk into your business, a clean, healthy carpet sets the first impression and should provide a safe environment for the employees. Over time airborne particles and other dirt can gather within the carpets. Besides aesthetics, keeping a clean carpet also helps provide healthy indoor air quality for everyone.

How often should my carpet be cleaned?

Carpets cleaning varies based on environment. It is often typical we notice commercial carpets that only need to be considered for cleaning no less than two to three times a years. Nevertheless, commercial carpets should be cleaned if you start to notice buildup of dirt. A clean fresh carpet, that looks it's best, contributes to a healthier environment and sets a great impression to customers by enhancing the overall appearance.

SERVPRO of Westfield is Here For Your Fire Restoration Needs

12/21/2018 (Permalink)

When the firefighters leave, it may seem like the danger has passed and the home is safe from further destruction, but without professionals to help clean the smoke damage, the building may never return to normal. While the principles behind fire restoration are fairly simple, it requires a lot of experience and manpower to perform adequately, and this means that it shouldn’t be attempted by a homeowner on his or her own.  The trained professionals at SERVPRO of Westfield should be called on-site immediately.  We can clean smoke damage and restore items affected by a fire, but we must be brought to the site as soon as possible to halt the ongoing issues that ash residue can cause.

The only way to properly clean smoke and fire damage is to be extremely thorough. Ash residue is easily disturbed and can spread through the building with ease, causing nearly everything to need restoration. The experts at SERVPRO of Westfield will identify what can and cannot be salvaged, and will remove any built-up ash residue that is coating surfaces. Over time, ash builds up in layers, and may eventually form into a lacquer-like consistency. Once this is done, the restorers will locate the source of the odor, and treat it with specialized detergents that are formulated for neutralizing this kind of odor. Once materials are treated, they may be sealed off to prevent any further odor from permeating the air in the future.

Catch Me If You Can...Tips To Help Decrease In-Home Flooding

12/20/2018 (Permalink)

Flooding in your home can happen in the blink of an eye. One moment everything is okay, and the next moment, water is everywhere. The experts at SERVPRO of Westfield are here to help make you more aware of common in-home appliances/areas to keep an eye out for.

Below are tips to aid in identifying and disarming their damage:

HOT WATER HEATER

What to do: Check the tank regularly for leaks. Have your tank maintained yearly. It is recommended to replace your water heater every 10 years.

WASHING MACHINE

What to do: Inspect hoses once a month. Look for signs of impending leaks, such as blisters, bulges, cracks, discoloration or kinks. Turn off the water supply to the washing machine when you go on vacation.

DISHWASHER

What to do: Tighten the drain line where it connects to under-sink plumbing. Replace the water supply line immediately if you run across a small leak. Don’t run the dishwasher while away from home.

REFRIGERATOR

What to do: Replace copper water lines with braided steel alternatives. Check the water supply line behind the fridge yearly.

AIR CONDITIONER

What to do: Install a secondary drain line and drain pan overflow switch. Have your A/C maintained regularly, which includes changing the filter and checking the refrigerant level.

Winter Time Storm Preparation Tips From SERVPRO of Westfield

12/20/2018 (Permalink)

Though it’s the beginning of winter, don’t think that you’re exempt from facing a storm with potential flooding. Taking proactive steps to protect your family and property from severe storms before they hit can save lives and minimize damage to your home or business.

Severe storms including hail storms, and flooding can cause billions of dollars in damage in the United States every year. When big storms hit, many families find themselves disorganized and unprepared. When preparing for a storm, it is important to have a storm plan and make sure everyone in your home knows the plan, in case of emergency.

Having a plan increases your chances of keeping you and your family safe. If you live in an area prone to flooding, consider buying flood insurance, as flooding is typically not covered under most homeowner’s insurance policies. In order to stay safe, it is important to understand your risks and have a plan of action in place before the storm hits.

Creating Your Storm Safety Plan

The first step is to create a written disaster plan and review it with everyone in your family, or as we call it at SERVPRO® of Westfield an ERP, Emergency Response Plan. Make sure everyone knows where to go and what to do in case of an emergency. Identify an emergency meeting place, such as a park, building, or other landmark near your home. If you get separated during the storm, have everyone meet at the designated location.

It is smart to assign an out-of-state friend or relative to be your family's emergency contact person. Teach all of the adults and responsible children how to shut off utilities in your home. Shutting off gas and water mains can decrease your risk of additional damage.

When severe storms are approaching your Houston community, tune into a local TV or radio broadcast covering the storm and follow evacuation orders, if they are issued. Check your emergency supplies and make sure you have enough water for everyone in your home, typically 1 gallon of water per person, per day for at least 3 days. Fill up your bathtubs with clean water. Turn your refrigerator and freezer up to the maximum setting so your food will stay cold for as long as possible in the event of a power outage. If you have storm shutters on your windows, make sure they are closed and secured. If not you can use pre-cut plywood to cover exposed glass. To prevent damage from flying objects, bring outdoor furniture, tools, pots and toys in from outside. Secure important documents, photographs and other valuables in a waterproof and/or fireproof case.

Housewarming Tips For The Winter Months

12/19/2018 (Permalink)

In Houston, we are used to having really hot summers. But our winters can get pretty frosty at times too. Most of us don’t really know how to properly maintain a comfortable temperature in our homes.

6 Mistakes to Avoid While Heating Your House This Winter

Six mistakes homeowners commonly make when heating their homes can possibly help you avoid these pitfalls in the coming months, to not work your thermostats overtime or possibly incur high heating costs:

  1. Turning Up a Thermostat Too High to Quickly Heat a Cold House

When coming home to a cold house, it might be tempting to turn the heater up into the 80s to try to heat it faster. But thermostats don’t work like an accelerator on a car, turning the heat up to blistering levels won’t warm your home faster. Allow the time that’s needed to build up to comfort, it may save you money.

  1. Turning the Thermostat Way Down at Night

It’s best to avoid extremes with your thermostat. If you let the temperature in your house fall dramatically overnight, it’s going to require a lot of work from your heating system to warm the home in the morning. That could really cost you more than you want to pay.

  1. Overworking a Thermostat That Has Its Limits

If you want the house to be 70 degrees and your thermostat is only reaching 66 degrees, turning the thermostat up to 74 degrees in an attempt to make up the difference could be a huge mistake. The furnace could be forced to work beyond its capability. Instead, find out what’s causing the problem and fix it. Heat could be escaping somewhere in your home, or you may need to replace a faulty furnace.

  1. Heating an Empty House

In this day and age of modern day technology, controlling everything from a phone app, one of the easiest ways to save money is to install a system that can be adjusted remotely. Heating an empty home is one of the easiest ways to waste money, so a programmable thermostat can save hundreds of dollars every year. Giving your thermostat a break every day – but don’t overdo it.

  1. Leaving Curtains Closed on Sunny Days

While your home is vacant, open the curtains to allow as much heating sunlight into your dwelling as possible.  Solar warmth can go a long way not only in heating a house, but also in helping to give the furnace a break during the warmest hours of the day.

BONUS TIP: Keep all windows clean.  Dusty, dirty windows don’t allow as much sunlight into your home, which could cost you valuable heating power.

  1. Not Locking Your Windows

In the summer, it’s common for homeowners to have a constant tango between opening the windows and keeping them closed to let the air conditioner do the hard work of keeping a home cool. Before the cold season, take the time to ensure all windows are locked and sealed to keep warm air from escaping.

Commercial Building: Water Damage Detection

10/23/2018 (Permalink)

Even on your lunch break, give SERVPRO of Westfield a call, we're here to help (281) 907-0018.

Being the owner of a commercial property in Houston, TX and the surrounding areas, you will likely be responsible for maintaining its pipework including repairs if things go wrong. Since most office buildings and businesses remain unoccupied at night and on weekends, the potential for water damage can be very high on these premises.

Detecting Water Damage

Leaks can be caused either suddenly as in the case of bursting pipes, which can be detected instantly or gradually by a hose or pipe leaking slowly over a period of time. Underground leaks are another common problem. To find out if your business has a water leak look for the following signs:

  • Do you hear the sound of running water?
  • Are any wet areas or running water visible?
  • Can you detect an unusual drop in water pressure?

If you find yourself answering yes to any of these questions in Houston, TX and the surrounding areas, there is a good chance of an undetected water leak present at your business. SERVPRO® of Westfield is available to come out to your place of business and check for moisture in your walls, floors, and ceiling. If you do in fact have a water leak, we will be able to successfully help with the structural drying of your business.

Fire Safety Tips: Pets Are Important Too

10/17/2018 (Permalink)

For some, pets are considered family too.

At any given moment, a fire emergency can take place in the North Houston area or abroad, and though unexpected; it can be beneficial to already have a plan in place for everyone in your home to evacuate and meet in a safe location. While you should always be most focused on keeping yourself and your family safe, you can also spend some time on pet preparation so that you can have a better chance of getting your pets out of danger as well.

For some, pets are considered family also. You can be better prepared to keep your pets safe during a fire emergency by following these safety tips:

1. Practice Evacuating

In the confusion caused by a fire, it can be hard to think of everything you need to do right away. If you have a plan in place and practice it a few times, you can be better prepared to handle a fire emergency. This can not only be helpful for pet safety, but also for the safety of everyone in your household.

2. Notice Where Your Pets Are

An important part of the planning process can be noticing where your pets usually spend their time. It can be especially helpful to note where they hide when frightened. You don’t want to put yourself at risk by spending too much time searching for your dog or cat during a fire emergency, but you can be better prepared to get yourself and your pets out as soon as possible by having a checklist of areas you can look.

3. Keep Collars and Leashes Handy

Fires can be especially frightening to pets. By keeping their collars and leashes handy, you can more easily guide them out of the house. If you are unable to find them, it can be easier for the fire department to get them out if they are wearing collars. It can be a good idea to hang leashes by the door you are planning to evacuate through.

Our SERVPRO of Westfield Technicians are highly trained in property restoration.

Mold Prevention

10/11/2018 (Permalink)

Mold can grow anywhere: on carpet, clothing, food, paper, and even in places you can't see, such as the backside of drywall, areas inside walls around leaking or condensing pipes, and above ceiling tiles.

Not only is having a mold problem difficult and costly to fix, but mold can also possibly produce allergens and irritants.

So what can you do if you're concerned about mold growing in your home? The best approach is preventing mold before it becomes a problem. The key to mold prevention is simple: moisture control.

9 Tips to Help Prevent Mold:

  1. Identify problem areas in your home and correct them. You can't mold-proof your home, but you can make it mold-resistant. Do you notice frequent condensation on an upstairs window? Is there a water stain on the ceiling from a persistent leak? Preventing mold from growing or spreading might be as simple as ripping up carpet in a damp basement, installing mold-resistant products, or repairing damaged gutters.
  2. Dry wet areas immediately. Mold can't grow without moisture, so tackle wet areas right away. If you've experienced a flood, remove water-damaged carpets, bedding, and furniture if they can't be completely dried. Even everyday occurrences need attention: don't leave wet items lying around the house, and make sure to dry the floor and walls after a shower. Don't leave wet clothes in the washing machine, where mold can spread quickly. Hang them to dry — preferably outside or in areas with good air circulation.
  3. Prevent moisture with proper ventilation. It may be that your routine domestic activities are encouraging the growth of mold in your home. Make sure an activity as simple as cooking dinner, taking a shower, or doing a load of laundry doesn't invite mold by providing proper ventilation in your bathroom, kitchen, laundry room, and any other high-moisture area. Your energy-efficient home may be holding moisture inside, so open a window when cooking or washing dishes or showering, or run an exhaust fan.
  4. Equip your home with mold-resistant products. Building a new home or renovating an old one? Use mold-resistant products like mold-resistant drywall or mold-resistant Sheetrock, and mold inhibitors for paints. Moisture-resistant drywall is especially valuable in areas prone to wetness, such as bathrooms, laundry rooms, basements, and kitchens.
  5. Monitor humidity indoors. Purchasing a moisture might be great, but you can also detect high humidity by simply paying attention to potential problem areas in your home. Telltale signs of excessive humidity include condensation on windows, pipes, and walls.
  6. Direct water away from your home. If the ground around your home isn't sufficiently sloped away from the foundation, water may collect there and seep into your crawlspace or basement.
  7. Clean or repair roof gutters. A mold problem might be a simple matter of a roof that is leaking because of full or damaged gutters.
  8. Improve air flow in your home. According to the EPA, as temperatures drop, the air is able to hold less moisture. Without good air flow in your home, that excess moisture may appear on your walls, windows and floors.
  9. Keep mold off household plants. The moist soil in indoor plants is a perfect breeding ground for mold. Instead of getting rid of your plants, try adding a bit of Taheebo tea to the water you give to your houseplants.

For areas that have already fallen victim to mold, there is hope. SERVPRO of Westfield is a leader in the North Houston community in mold remediation and here to help! Please call (281) 907-0018 and we will make it “Like it never even happened.”

Houston, TX Forecast - Rain, Rain and More Rain

10/10/2018 (Permalink)

The forecast in Houston, TX calls for several heavy downpours, increasing daily. Continuous heavy rain can heighten safety concerns.

Heavy rain and flooding are considered two of the most common and widespread natural disasters in the United States.  No matter the location, there is always potential for flood damage.  In the last 5 years, via floodsmart.gov reports, all 50 states have experienced floods or flash floods.  Just because you haven't experienced a flood in the past, does not mean you won't in the future.

Please remember these safety tips:

  • Stay away from floodwaters.  Six inches of swiftly moving water can sweep you off of your feet.
  • If you approach a flooded road while driving, turn around and go another way.  If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are rising rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground.  Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.
  • Keep children out of the water.  They can be curious and often lack judgment about running water or contaminated water.

If flood damage strikes your Houston, TX home or business, don’t hesitate to contact SERVPRO of Westfield (281) 907-0018. Even minor floods have the potential to cause major damage to a structure when not treated quickly and properly, and the cleanup is often an overwhelming task.  SERVPRO is prepared to handle any size disaster.

Extending The Life Of A Candle

6/25/2018 (Permalink)

Tips to extend the life of your candle for smell or survival.

We burn candles for a variety of reasons, whether for the aroma or to light the home due to a power outage. Did you know that you could actually assist them in burning longer?

Tip 1: Freeze your candle. Yes, put it in the freezer! By doing so, you are hardening the wax, which makes it melt more slowly and therefore last longer. It may not be feasible to store all of your candles in your freezer, so simply slip your next-up-to-burn candle into the freezer on the morning or night before you’re planning to light it.

Tip 2: After letting the candle burn long enough for a pool of wax to collect around the wick, blow out the flame. Then, quickly sprinkle table salt into the liquid wax. If necessary, use a toothpick to ensure that the salt actually mixes into the wax and doesn’t just sit on the surface.  Then re-light the candle.  Adding salt serves the same purpose as putting the candle in the freezer—it slows down the rate at which the wax melts, giving you a longer, more economical burn.  What matters most is how long you let the candle burn the first time you light it. Try not to extinguish it until the pool of wax has extended across the diameter of the candle. Blow it out too soon, and you may cause the candle to leave excess wax; if it doesn’t melt on the first lighting, the dry, hard wax around the outside edge will almost never burn.

Tip 3: It can also be helpful to keep the candle wick trimmed to about a quarter inch in length, because longer wicks tend to burn faster.  Leftover wax is a sign that the candle didn’t burn to its full potential. To get the most bang for your buck, make sure that the candle burns both evenly and completely. Finally, remember not to leave the candle near a door or window or in any similarly drafty spot; not only is such a location unsafe, but it can also result in uneven burning.

Flood Water Facts

6/25/2018 (Permalink)

Across the United States, flooding is one of the most commonly widespread weather-related disasters. Whether your home or business is near a coastline, along city streets, in the mountains, near a river or even in the desert, there is always potential for flood damage.

Though you may have never experienced a flood in the past, there’s no level of security to assure that you won't in the future.  In fact, 20% of all claims paid by the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) were for policies in low-risk communities.

According to the American Red Cross (ARC), floods cause more damage in the U.S. every year than any other weather-related disaster.  The ARC offers the following safety tips:

  • Stay away from floodwaters as much as possible.  If you approach a flowing stream where water is above your ankles, stop, turn around, and go another way.  Six inches of swiftly moving water can sweep you off of your feet.
  • If you approach a flooded road while driving, turn around and go another way.  If you are caught on a flooded road and water are rising rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground.  Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.
  • Keep children out of the water.  They are curious and often lack judgment about running water or contaminated water.

If your home or business is ever affected by a flood, contact the professionals at SERVPRO of Westfield at (281) 907-0018.  Even minor floods have the potential to cause major damage to a structure when not treated quickly and properly, and the cleanup is often an overwhelming task.  The SERVPRO system is prepared to handle any size disaster.  The sooner work begins; the sooner your home or business can return “Like it never even happened.”

Home Fires: Grilling Safety Tips

6/21/2018 (Permalink)

Nearly 8,900 home fires are started by grilling accidents each year.

Fire in the grill, under hot dogs and burgers, is a welcome sight at the family cookout. But fire anywhere else can make your summer kick-off barbecue memorable for all the wrong reasons. To keep you and your family safe while grilling, follow these general guidelines.

General grilling tips:

  •  Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors.
  • The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
  • Keep children and pets away from the grill area.
  • Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.
  • Never leave your grill unattended.

Propane grills:

Before you use your grill:

  •  Check the major connection points between the gas (propane) tank hose and the regulator and cylinder, and where the hose connects to the burners. Tighten if loose.
  • Check the gas (propane) tank hose for the potential (gas) leaks. To do that:
    • Apply a light soap and water solution to the hose using a brush or spray bottle.
    • Turn the propane tank on. If there is a gas leak, the propane will release bubbles around the hose (big enough to see).
    • If there are no bubbles, your grill is safe to use.
  • If there are bubbles, turn off the tank and check connections, then have your grill serviced by a professional before using it again.
  • If the leak doesn’t stop, call the fire department immediately.

When the grill is on:

  • As you are cooking, if you smell gas, turn off the gas tank and burners.
  • If the leak stops immediately, get the grill serviced by a professional before using it again.
  • If the smell continues, move away from the grill and call the fire department immediately. Do not move the grill.

Charcoal grills:

  •  There are several ways to get the charcoal ready to use. Charcoal chimney starters allow you to start the charcoal using newspaper as a fuel.
  • If you use a starter fluid, use only charcoal starter fluid. Never add charcoal fluid or any other flammable liquids to the fire.
  • Keep charcoal fluid out of the reach of children and away from heat sources.
  • There are also electric charcoal starters, which do not use fire. Be sure to use an extension cord for outdoor use.
  • When you are finished grilling, let the coals completely cool before disposing in a metal container.

Flood Safety Tips: Houston, Texas

6/21/2018 (Permalink)

With the recent rain storms that the Houston and surrounding areas of Texas have been experiencing the past few days, sharing some basic flood safety tips may be very helpful. There is no good time for a flood.  No matter the size, minor or massive, a flood can cause a great deal of damage and poses a risk to people living and traveling through the flooded area.

To provide assistance to you, your family, home, and vehicles to aid in navigating through a flood without harm, follow these simple flood safety tips:

Prepare Before a Flood Hits

It may seem odd preparing for a flood before it even happens. However, if flooding is imminent, be prepared to leave your property. If floodwaters get too high, pack enough clothing and supplies to last a few days. Make sure to put important documents in your bag also. If time permits, try to move furniture and electronics to a second floor and flip off the circuit breakers to avoid electrical fires.

Keep Safe During a Flood

One of the most important flood safety tips to remember is to stay out of the water as much as possible. If you do have to evacuate during a flood, avoid walking through moving waters. As little as six inches of water can make an adult lose their balance and fall. Carry a walking stick with you to check for solid ground under the water ahead of you. Watch out for electrical equipment and fallen power lines.

If you’re driving during a flood, don’t attempt to drive through moving floodwaters. Two feet of moving water could be strong enough to wash your car away. If water begins to rise around your car, abandon the car if you’re able, and go to a safer area.

Dealing with the Aftermath

Return to your home only after being told it is safe to do so. You’ll need to begin the restoration process. Any remaining water should be removed as soon as possible. Everything within the home must be dried and disinfected quickly to prevent mold and mildew that can set in within 24 hours of the flooding. With SERVPRO of Westfield on your side we will help with all your water restoration needs. We are just one phone call away to make your flooding “Like it never even happened.”

Hazardous Mold Can Begin To Develop Within 24 Hours After Water Damage

1/8/2018 (Permalink)

Air Scrubber, professional equipment provided by SERVPRO.

With the expertise and reputation of SERVPRO of Westfield, we can handle water damage emergencies immediately, as the threat of potentially hazardous mold can begin to grow and develop as soon as 24 hours after the original water damage.

When a water loss occurs, SERVPRO of Westfield uses specialized equipment like dehumidifiers to dry properties and reduce the humidity levels. This is an extremely important part of cleanup after water damage.

Normal drying methods may be the first thought of the customer, but in most cases, are simply not enough to reduce the humidity levels in a home after a major accident of water loss. Mold is able to grow behind cabinets, walls and under flooring very quickly, so the threat has to be handled by professionals who know how to properly dry flooring, walls, and other fixtures on the property.

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.

If you think that your home or business may have a mold problem, we can assist with having you scheduled for a certified mold test and inspection, with a follow up service to use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.
